A lead alloy object possibly a forgers mould - possibly for making copies of gold guineas / coins of William and Mary (1689-1694). The object is a disc of lead with the impressed design of a double headed bust depicting both the portraits of William III (with long flowing hair tied at the back) and Mary II with a (sharp pointed nose). The inscription around the edge of the impression is indistinct - partially through wear and possibly from being a poor impression from a worn coin. The inscription - like the busts - is backwards and reads GVL[ILEM]VS ET MAR[IA DE]I [GRATIA]. The reve…

A stone mould formed from a mudstone nodule of probable Medieval or Post Medieval date (1000-1700). The mould is relatively crude being cut into the base of the shallow dish-like nodule. There is no evidence of an upper part - therefore it is suggested that it was used for casting uni-face objects. The design consists of a single vertical cross; this has been cut using V shaped wedges to form the axis, and irregular circular hollows forming the terminals. The hollows are irregular in size and shape suggesting they may have been hand carved rather than drilled. At the base of the cross…

Incomplete fragment of a two part carved stone mould for the production of a three dimensional lead alloy (pewter) miniature or toy of probable early post-medieval date (1500-1650). The mould is made from a relatively soft sedimentary rock, probably a calcareous mudstone (siltstone) dating from the Jurassic horizon. The mould has been shaped into an elongated sub-rectangular tablet, of which only the top 1/3 has been found. One face of the mould has been smoothed and polished; this face has had the intricate design carved into it. The other faces of the tablet are un-worked and have r…

Upper part of a two part carved sub-rectangular stone mould for the production of a circular unidentified item probably for casting either lead tokens or badges of probable late medieval or post-medieval date (1450-1700). The lower part is missing. The stone has been carved into a roughly sub-rectangular block with a series of seven angular sides. It measures 97.3mm in length, 66.2mm width, and is 30.7mm thick. It weighs 339 grams. The stone used to make the mould is ‘a very fine silt or mud stone with large quantities of mica within it’. All the faces have been roughly worke…

Carved sub-rectangular open stone mould for the production of lead tokens of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The stone has been carved into a roughly sub-rectangular block with slightly angular sides. It measures 76.4mm in length, 69.5mm width, and is 33.9mm thick. It weighs 378 grams. The stone used to make the mould is 'a very fine sandstone with large quantities of mica within it'. Similar types of sandstone are found locally across both Herefordshire and Shropshire (pers. comm. Daniel Lockett). All the faces, apart from the top, are roughly chiseled flat. The up…
