Sherd from the wall of a relatively thin walled Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a drinking vessel of post medieval date (1600 – 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple orange and the inner and outer are a mottled purple grey. The inner and outer surfaces are also burnished. The outer edge has a series of parallel l…

Glazed sherd from the rim of an extremely hard earthenware jar, jug or storage vessel of probable later medieval date (1350-1550). The sherd consists of both the rim and part of the broken sidewall. The rim is near vertical and the sidewall expands slightly before tapering. It is relatively large with unabraded edges. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is almost plastic in structure (being very like stoneware); it is mica rich, having frequent grit-like inclusions. The fabric is a matt grey colour. The exterior surface is glazed and it is a mottled brown green colour. The sherd…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd either dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) or the medieval period (1200-1500). From what remains it is more likely to be Roman in date and from the local ‘Severn Valley’ like wares, but the style of the rim is unusual being relatively thick and flared, rather than everted as in most Roman vessels. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid ora…

Two undiagnostic body sherds from pottery vessels of medieval date (1100 – 1300). The fabric of each sherd is similar, although the thickness and condition differ. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, having abundant angular and sub-angular white quartz, and grit-like inclusions. The fabric colour varies from light - dark oxidised orange. The larger sherd is similar to Roman Severn Valley wares but the context of this find would suggest a medieval date Bulk weight: 4.98 grams

A relatively small sherd from the base of a glazed vessel of probable medieval (1150-1400) date. The external face of the sherd is glazed with a relatively thin yellowish green coloured glaze which survives in patches. The rim and body is missing. The base of the pot is likely to be relatively flat. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, and quartz inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is an oxidised orange colour. A suggested diameter of the vessel, heigh…

Glazed sherd from the rim of an earthenware jar or cooking vessel of medieval date (1100-1400). The sherd consists of both the rim; the sidewall being broken. The rim is stepped with an internal groove which tapers and the swells into the body of the vessel. It is relatively large with abraded edges. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, having abundant angular and sub-angular white quartz, and grit-like inclusions. The fabric is an orange brown colour. The exterior surface is very sandy in nature possibly as a result of leaching in the soil. Remnants of a yellow green …

Three glazed body sherds from pottery vessels of medieval date (1100 – 1300). The fabric of each sherd is similar, although the thickness, condition and glaze differ. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, having abundant angular and sub-angular white quartz, and grit-like inclusions. There is also a powdery white inclusion which may be decayed limestone – there are also oval voids in the fabric which could suggest that limestone has been leached from the fabric. Sherd from either an urn or carinated jar of early medieval date (500 – 700AD). The sherd is broken and incomplete; the inner surface of the pot is lost due to a laminating fracture. What remains is much abraded. The upper surface of the sherd is decorated; the surface is burnished and a decorative pattern impressed. This pattern consists of a series of double horizontal parallel bands which have been formed by impressing the surface with a tool, the section of each grooved band is U shaped. Two areas of these double bands exist on the sherd. Between these two double bands are a seri…

Body sherd from a pottery vessel of probable medieval date. The sherd is likely to be from a relatively thin walled unglazed vessel; not enough survives to suggest the overall size or form; but the fabric of the vessel would suggest a functional utilitarian use such as a storage jar. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, having abundant angular and sub-angular white and rose quartz, and frequent inclusions of grog. The fabric is a mid orange colour; the outside surface is abraded and slightly burnished. The inner surface has a grey concreted layer present; this does not…

Rim sherd from a probable Roman ‘Severn Valley Ware’ Vessel (50-400 AD). The sherd is heavily abraded and a fresh open section cannot be seen; therefore it is impossible to provide a description of the fabric. The pottery is a mid red brown colour; the outer surface is discoloured and abraded. The size and capacity of the vessel cannot be suggested from this sherd; it measures 23.8mm length, 25.7mm width is 10.8mm thick at the rim, and 3.8mm thick body. The sherd weighs 4.5 grams

Very large fragment from the rim of a large ‘Severn Valley type’ oxidised storage jar of Roman date. It is possible that this storage jar is copying amphorae of the period, due to its thickness and size. The rim is extremely large and thick, in section it has a reverse C shaped section with an overturned thick rim which does not taper into the body, the thickness remains constant to the broken edge. The fragment has relatively sharp unabraded edges, suggesting recent removal from an archaeological context, below the ploughsoil. The fabric a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, hav…

The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is mica rich, having abundant angular and sub-angular white quartz, grog and grit-like inclusions.
