Object type: DAGGER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wirral
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near-complete cast copper alloy dagger guard / quillon of later post medieval date. The guard is likely to be from a small-sword or dress sword of late post medieval date (1650 - 1800) although some have suggested that the small size could indicate it being from a child's dress sword or even a toy. The body of the guard is an irregular oval shape in plan being concave / dished in profile. A rectangular perforation / hole is present on one edge; the hole is deliberately off set and is designed to accommodate the tang of the blade. The hole measures 8.4mm length and is 3.7mm wide. …

Silver penny (broken and heavily worn) of Edward I (1272-1307) or Edward II (1307-1327) struck in Durham. The date cannot be further refined as most useful details are lost. In broad terms the lettering is very large and widely spread - possibly suggesting a date later within the reign of Edward I / early Edward II - the most common class is Class 10 (1300-1310) and it is possible that this coin dates from that period.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wirral
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1600-1720). The buckle frame is incomplete - approximately 1/3 survives the breaks are old and corroded. The frame would originally have been a sub-rectangular shape in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated; fleur-de-lis shaped knops extend above the axis bar and the exterior frame has a C shaped scroll on its upper edge. Large flower / rose knops are present at the …

Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is broken and is attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated; small knops extend either side of the axis bar and more ornate projections are present at the short edge; these cast projections are most probably debased fle…

A cast copper alloy buckle frame of post-medieval date (1570-1700). The frame of the buckle is rectangular in plan with a slight central axis bar to which a pin / chape which would have fitted. The remains of a copper alloy pin is corroded to one face. In profile the frame is slightly bowed. There is no evidence for a pin rest on the frame and the buckle is undecorated. It is dark grey / green colour. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', page 75, specifically examples 457-464. Whitehead suggests that these date from the post medi…

A cast copper alloy buckle frame of post-medieval date (1660-1720). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular in plan with two central drilled holes to which an iron spindle / axis bar (now lost) would have fixed. Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wirral
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is broadly circular in plan (with faceted edges) and is oval in cross section. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The external surface is dusty green colour with a relatively poorly preserved patchy dark green patina. The patination of the metal would suggest a post medieval date. The function of the ring is varied; it is worn, a direct use cannot be attributed. The ring measures 26.5mm in diameter, the frame is 3.8mm wide, and is 2.5mm thick. The internal diameter is 19.9mm. The ring …

A cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 7.0mm. Both faces are similar having a slight rim around the central hole and a thick rim around the external edge. The cast design on each face is similar comprising an irregular eight pointed star with small pellets between the angles. Each point is formed from an irregula…
