A complete cast copper-alloy buckle frame and rectangular strap plate of either Roman (AD 50-400) or Medieval (AD 1150-1350) date . The buckle frame is D shaped in plan and sub-rectangular in section. It has an offset narrowed strap bar. There is no recess or notch to act as a pin rest. The upper surface of the buckle is decorated with a series of finely incised motifs consisting of five evenly spaced ring-and-dots. Around the edge of the buckle frame is a border formed from a single incised line that follows both the interior and exterior edges; this line is itself flanked by a doubl…

County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete and badly distorted lead rich copper alloy candlestick of later medieval or post medieval date. The candlestick is composite with the base being attached to the stem of the stick. The base is incomplete having lost most of its external edge. The stem of the candle stick is oval in section with the edges being faceted. Object type: STUD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy stud or mount of probable medieval or post medieval date (1400-1800). The mount is very large and is probably from a piece of harness or more likely furniture. The head of the stud is circular in plan with a smooth heavily patinated green surface - there is no cast or applied decoration present. The shank of the stud is square in shape extending to a blunted point. A direct parallel has not been found but due to the colour of the metal and surface patina a post medieval date is preferred. The head of the stud measures 31.8mm in diameter and is 4.7mm thick, the s…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy button probably dating from the later post medieval period (1550-1750). The button is circular in plan and domed (D shaped). The head is solid and cast in one piece. The front face is decorated with an intricate design comprising a central domed pellet from which six raised crescent shaped arms extend conjoining with a raised circumferential rim. Between the raised arms are recessed semi-circular panels. It is possible that the raised ribs are further decorated with transverse incised lines. The rear of the button has a single integrally cast projection / shank (dia…

Object type: CHAPE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late medieval or post-medieval (1400-1600) chape from a dagger scabbard. The chape is triangular in plan and rectangular in section . It is formed from a folded copper-alloy sheet that has been crimped and hammered at the edges. The two edges of the sheet have then been overlapped and the join soldered with a white metal. The chape has been distorted in the soil which has caused the soldered seam to open. The short sides on the upper edge have both been pierced with irregular oval holes which have angular edges. These holes would originally have held metal rivets to secure the chap…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete cast copper alloy double looped rectangular buckle with central bar of later medieval date (1400-1500). The frame of the buckle is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar to which the pin (not present) would have fitted. In profile the frame has a pronounced reverse curve (so that the central bar is set back from the edges of the outer frame). There is some iron staining on the buckle and this may be indicative of the use of an iron pin, however, it may suggest an iron rich burial environment. The buckle is decorated with a number of geometric cast designs. These are pr…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete cast copper alloy double looped rectangular buckle with central bar of post medieval date (1500-1650). The frame of the buckle is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar to which a cut pin fits. In profile the frame is slightly bowed (with the central pin being further forward than the frame). However, this has been extenuated by more recent damage. The pin is fitted to the central bar by the end of the sheet metal being folded to form a small loop. The bar itself expands in width at the centre where the pin joins and a small hour-glass shaped hole has been cut to which…
