A complete struck/ hammered silver short cross penny of Henry III, identified as a Class 7b and minted between AD 1217/8-1242 (diameter: 18.2mm; thickness: 0.7mm; weight: 1.20g). Minted by Ravlf in London, this coin’s distinguishing feature is the form of the letter ‘A’ which now has a square shape, as well as having no pellets in the hair curls (Wren, 1992, page 62). The coin is slightly worn but in a good condition which most of the detail visible.

Characteristically for this class, the 'X' is formed from one straight and one curved limb as well have having the obverse inscription 'HENRICVS REX TERCI', which only appears on Class II. coins. A cut quarter of a possible Henry III short cross silver hammered penny. From the little evidence we do have from the remains of the coin, the three curls illustrating hair on the obverse may suggest that this coin can be classified as a Class VI, dating from 1210-1217 AD.

This coin has been classified as Class 5b. As a result of the strange lettering especially on the reverse, this coin may be a contemporary imitation, but it could also show a mistake in the original die-casting.
