A contemporary copy of an IISVPRASV stater - ABC (Cottam et all 2010) no. 1917, p.99. Reverse: IISV; disjointed horse left facing, annulet below neck. ABC calls this ruler ESVPRASV, however IISVPRASV is how the name appears on the coins. They were struck somewhere between about AD 30 and 50, in Lincolnshire and surrounding counties (and therefore get attributed to the "Corieltavi").

A copper alloy fantasy coin, a cast imitation probably of 20th century manufacture. Its designs are based on reverse designs of Iron Age silver tetradrachms attributed to the Eastern Celtic peoples of the Danube basin. Genuine coins of this type are themselves imitations of tetradrachms of Philip II of Macedon (and his successors) dating from about 400 BC - 100 BC. For the side with the right-facing horseman and the inscription, reading PHILIP[] in Greek, see D Allen, Catalogue of the Celtic Coins in the British Museum, Volume I, Silver coins of the East Celts and Balkan peoples (J Ke…

It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'. The present coin dates to the late British Iron Age, circa 50-30 BC. It is a 'Climping type' gold stater (see Cottam et al 2010, Ancient British Coinage, p. 49, no. 524). The current specimen was made using the same pair of punches (or dies) as the eight specimens reported in 2001, the two coins from the 2004 addenda (2004T114) and the single 'Climping type' from the 2006 addenda (2006T107; SUSS-861DE4). The 'Climping type' is a left facing version of the common 'British L' series.

A worn and melted gold disc, probably a Gallo-Belgic A stater. Dimensions: Thickness: 1.9mm; Diameter: 24.2mm; Weight 7.60g Discussion: This item was submitted for consideration as potential Treasure because it was found very close to a previously recorded Roman gold aureus of Trajan (BH-80B838). However, given that the coin is likely to be a Gallo-Belgic A stater dating to the 2nd Century BC, the proximity of its findspot to the gold aureus is thought to be coincidental rather than representational of a group of coins lost at the same time. It therefore falls outside the criter…

An excavation around the findspot in October 2013 produced a further 22 coins (including gold, silver and base metal types) as well as a number of base metal and non-metal objects. The Coins The coin assemblage consisted of twenty-six coins. Three are Roman Republican coins, struck in 118, 104 and 46 BC respectively. Despite the early date of these coins, there is no particular reason to assume that they arrived in Britain before the Roman invasion in AD 43, as…

An inquest held in 2003 found the estimated 2,500 coins and associated finds to be Treasure.
