A complete Post-Medieval or Modern copper-alloy single-pointed tag (teller) or marker for 10 links from a surveyor's chain or Gunter's chain (c. 1620-c. 1970). One end has an attachment loop with a circular hole, 8.1mm in diameter. The sides are convex in plan and taper to a point. The object is reddish brown. Length: 50.0mm; width: 13.2mm; thickness: 2.0mm. Weight: 7.04g. Compare with BUC-EED724 on this database which states that the surveying chain was first recorded by Edmund Gunter in 1579 and the examples such as these would not have pre-dated 1620.
