An incomplete and flattened post-medieval lead alloy powder flask nozzle, or funnel (1600-1700). The powder flask nozzle can be described in two parts, the upper part or container and the lower part or nozzle. The container is sub-rectangular in plan but would have been circular or oval. The container has a depth of c. 17.0mm and a width of 31.5mm at the thickened rim. At each lower corner of the container are the remains of an attachment loop. The nozzle would have been conical in shape and circular in cross-section. The nozzle measures 22.7mm in length, 14.0mm in width and 6.1mm …

An incomplete post-Medieval, probably soldered lead alloy powder flask nozzle or funnel (1600-1700). The nozzle is missing. The container is largely semi-circular in plan due to being squashed but would have originally been circular in plan. There is a distinct rim at the open end. The two attachment loops are present but are now bent. The hole where the nozzle was attached is off-centre. Height: 18.0mm; width: 26.3mm; thickness: 20.4mm; thickness of rim: 1.9mm. Weight: 18.92g. Similar powder flasks have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For exampl…

Complete lead powder flask nozzle or funnel used for measuring a charge of gunpowder. Probably seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700). Length 39mm, width 27mm and 12mm thick. Both sides of the mouth of the cap are bent inwards so that they almost make contact. It has an oval-"shaped" base" which has a maximum length of 13mm and a maximum width of 7mm. Prior to being deformed, it would have had an oval mouth. Viewed with the mouth at the top, the sides flare gently outwards and upwards from the base. At the base, an integral loop projects either side, although each one is bent…

An almost complete but damaged and misshapen cast lead powder flask nozzle (or funnel) used for measuring a charge of gunpowder. Probably seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700). Length 44.9mm, width 23.5mm and 17.4mm thick. Weight 27.78g. One side of the upper part, the measure, is bent inwards so that it makes contact with the opposite side. The rim of the measure would probably have been oval in plan, prior to being damaged. A vertical casting seam on the measure is barely visible due to wear. At one side of the measure, close to the base, is a misshapen loop. A similar loop a…

An incomplete post-Medieval lead alloy powder flask nozzle, or funnel (1600-1700). The powder flask nozzle can be described in two parts, the upper part or container and the lower part or nozzle. The container is sub-circular in plan. The container has a depth of c. 15.0mm and is 1.5mm thick. Seams are not visible. One attachment loop is complete and there are stubs of the other. The nozzle is conical in shape and sub-circular in cross-section. There is no hole in the nozzle to allow the powder to pass through, so this example may be miscast. The nozzle measures 10.9 mm in length, …

An almost complete and misshapen post-Medieval cast lead-alloy powder flask nozzle (or funnel) used for measuring a charge of gunpowder (c. 1600 - c. 1700). The upper part of the measure, the container, would have been oval in cross-section prior to being squashed. It is 15.6mm in depth. The sides of this part flare outwards and upwards from the bottom to the plain rim at the top. At the bottom of the container there are two integral loops, one at each narrower end. Both loops are slightly misshapen and are bent upwards. On one face of the container there is a vertical casting seam an…

A complete but slightly misshapen post-Medieval lead-alloy powder flask nozzle or funnel (1600-1700). The upper part, the container, may have been soldered to the lower part, the nozzle. The container is pointed-oval when viewed from above. This part has a depth of about 17.0mm and a maximum width at the top of 27.9mm. At the top there is a plain rim and at one side there is a vertical casting seam. At each side of the container, close to the nozzle, is an integral loop. Projecting from the centre of the container base is a tapering integral nozzle (or funnel) which is about 18.4mm …
