A post-Medieval copper-alloy object, probably one half of a hinged element (c. 1500-c. 1650). This object is roughly rectangular in plan with a multifoil terminal at the attachment end. The front plate, which is integral with the hook, has been riveted to the smaller back plate. The flat-headed rivet is situated along the longitudinal centre-line, close to the hook. However, it is barely visible. The hook is rectangular and is bent back towards the edge of the plate. The plate is mainly reddish brown and light green with patches of a green patina. There are patches of gilding at…

An incomplete post-Medieval sheet copper-alloy hinged object, possibly from a box, casket or a book (c. 1500-c. 1700). This object would have consisted or two separate parts. The surviving part is roughly shield-shaped with the remains of an iron spindle or axis bar. A circular openwork perforation at the centre measures 6.4mm in diameter overall. There is a circular hole at each corner. One contains a complete copper-alloy domed headed pin or rivet, another contains the remains of a copper-alloy pin or rivet and the other is empty. A complete post-Medieval sheet copper-alloy hinged object, possibly from a box, casket or a book (c. 1500-c. 1700). This object consists of two separate parts joined by a hinge. The larger part is roughly triangular in plan, with an openwork body and an end which terminates in a fleur-de-lis. A rivet hole at the centre of the fleur-de-lis is filled with the remains of an iron rivet. Just prior to the openwork is another rivet hole with the remains of an iron rivet. Beyond the second rivet hole there is a narrowed protrusion which fits into the centre of the smaller part. The sec…

An almost complete sheet copper-alloy decorative hinge from either a box or possibly a book fitting of probable post-Medieval date (c. 1600-c. 1750). This fitting comprises two plates which pivot on an iron axis bar. Both plates are of similar design. The fitting is broadly sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. Both plates have openwork decoration. These designs contour the outer edges with a series of semi-circular curves. Plate 1 has an almost complete trefoil knop at one end and four openings. Three of the openings are cordate and the other is pentag…

An incomplete and corroded post-Medieval copper-alloy hinge (c. 1500-c. 1800). This hinge is sub-rectangular in plan. At each corner there is a lobed projection. At the rear, one end has a hinge turning on a separate spindle of unclear metal which remains within. The opposite end has a double tapering spike, now incomplete. The front is decorated with an oval groove which has a raised motif within which is possibly floral. The front is corroded and reddish green and the rear appears to be coated in black lacquer. Length: 20.6mm; width: 12.9mm; thickness: 1.7mm; thickne…

Almost one half of a post-Medieval copper-alloy hinged book fitting (c. 1500-c. 1600). The object is in the form of a flat plate with a cylinder at one end that contains a corroded iron spindle. At the opposite end there is a central triangular projection which is flanked on either side by a curving arm. One of the arms is largely missing. The complete arm has a lobate terminal which is pierced to form a circular hole for a rivet (now missing). There is a similar rivet hole at the centre of the plate. The front has a border formed of rocker work in zigzag style. This decoration is …

A post-Medieval cast copper-alloy hinged plate (c. 1550-c. 1700). The artefact is largely flat sub-rectangular in plan and is formed of two elements of similar widths. The larger of the two parts has an overall length of 34.7mm. At one end it has a central tubular protrusion (5.5mm in width and 5.2mm in thickness) that accommodates a hinge pin. At the other end there is a small rectangular knop that is flat on one face and protrudes on the other face. About mid-way along each side there is a semi-circular recess with a rounded tip. These are similar to knops. At one end, close to the…

However, at one end an integral sub-circular element, having a maximum diameter of about 13.0mm, terminates with a small knop. The opposite end terminates in an old transverse break. Except for a 12.0mm length along one of the sides, the parallel sides at the front have been bevelled by filing and the file marks are clearly visible. The plate has two circular perforations for rivets or …
