A fragment of a Medieval copper-alloy dagger guard or quillon (c. 1250-c. 1400). This fragment is slightly less than one half of the object and a break has occurred adjacent to a slot that would have accommodated a blade or tang. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan, sub-oval in cross-section and curves downwards at the terminal end. The upper and lower surfaces are almost flat and both sides are curved. There is a deep 'V'-shaped recess on the lower surface close to the break. The terminal end is bulbous. The break is crisp but appears to be old. This guard has a dark brown pa…

Complete cast copper alloy dagger guard (quillon) of probable Early Post-medieval date. Length 78mm, overall width 34mm and 3mm thick. Weight 17.12g. As viewed in plan from the top the arms forming the guard are of an elongated S-shape and are generally sub-rectangular in cross-section. However, they become spatulated and rounded at each end. One of the arms has a slight twist and it is unclear whether this is an intentional feature of the design or damage which occurred during use or following deposition. The inner of the quillon block curves in order to accommodate the aperture…

In plan, it has an ogival-shaped outline and a central mid-rib on both faces. In cross-section it is lozenge-shaped. Three parallel grooves either side of the rib follow the ogival outline. The blade was attached to the hilt by means of three large rivets. These are missing and the rivet holes are incomplete due to breaks or possibly corrosion. The base of the hilt was characteristically omega-shaped. Evidence for this can be seen on one face due to the di…
