11 base metal Roman coins found close together (same 10-figure grid reference). The coins are so worn as to be illegible, but by their size and weight they appear to be mostly of the denomination known as the sestertius, with the smaller, lighter coins probably the fractions known as the dupondius or as. One coin can be tentatively identified as a coin of Hadrian (AD 117-138) and another is likely to be of Antonine date, that is circa AD 138-192) Number Diameter (mm) Weight (g) Issuer / denomination Finder …

TAKEN TO THE BM, 4/9/15 449 Roman nummi and 23 pottery sherds belonging to the vessel that contained the coins. Treasure case no. 2015 T591. The coins are copper alloy nummi ranging in date from the very last years of the 3rd century AD to the late AD 320s. The latest coins were struck in AD 327-8. Half of the coins in the hoard are from the London mint, whereas another quarter is from the Trier mint. On the whole, the chronological distribution of the coins is similar to that of hoards terminating in the second half of the AD 320s, before the nummus was reduced in weight in AD 330…

Three Medieval silver pennies fused together. The outer two have the obverses facing outward, with the inner one almost completely obscured. Treasure case no. 2014 T328. The clearer of the two outward facing coins is a PAXS type (crown 1) North 848. This type has traditionally been interpreted as the final issue of William I (1066-87), but which most recent commentators have reattributed as the first issue of William II (1087-1100). The other is very worn, but also shows a facing bust with a sceptre to the right which is probably also William I or William II. Since only the obverse…

Twenty Roman coins found in Brading parish in an area of about 25.0m in diameter. Treasure case no. 2011 T181. The coins were found on different occasions between 2003 and 2010. The finder stated that his brother also found a few during this period, but he has been unable to find them. This modest purse-full of bronzes runs up to at least the Antonine period. However the deposition date could be much later given the very worn condition of the coins and the lack of supply of post-Antonine bronzes to Roman Britain. The wear and corrosion precludes full identification beyond the empero…
