An incomplete Medieval decorated annular brooch (AD 1300-1400). Treasure case no. 2012 T221.
The brooch is convex at the front and flat on the reverse. Its front surface has a legend within a raised border and the reverse is decorated.
On the front surface the legend has a quatrefoil initial mark and in Lombardic lettering reads: IACEPARMELCHIORBALTASA (the Magi, Jaspar, Melchior and Balthasar).The letter S is the form of an M and is turned sideways to conserve space. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy and enamelled symmetrical plate brooch (c. AD 100-200). Bayley and Butcher 2005: 176-177, ref: T227.
The brooch is lozengiform in plan, with a stepped profile of three tiers, the uppermost forming a recessed cell retaining traces of white enamel over white ?cement. There is no surface treatment.
The rear face is concave at the centre with the vestigial remains of two pin lugs and a catch-plate.
This brooch is in poor condition and the breaks are old.

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy 'T'-shaped brooch with a hinged pin (AD 50-150).
At the head the wings are cylindrical and contain a copper-alloy axis bar. Adjacent to the bow, the wings have a diameter of c. 3.0mm. Mid-way along the width of the head is slot for the pin. Within the slot a copper-alloy loop and a small portion of the shaft of the pin are intact. The bow has a width of 7.9mm at the top and the width at the break is c. 6.6mm. The arms are semi-cylindrical and open at the rear with pierced plates at the ends. There are two wide vertical grooves at the front of each arm. Gilded copper-alloy small square-headed brooch. Pin missing. Early Anglo-Saxon, sixth century AD.
Although the outside edge of the rectangular head-plate frame is very eroded, it can be determined that the frame was decorated with regularly spaced punched annulets. A small complete oval-shaped, silver annular brooch of the thirteenth or fourteenth century. Length 23mm, width 19.5mm and 2.0mm thick. Weight 2.58g. The frame to one side of the pin is of twisted cable pattern. Within each twist is a line of closely related granulations. The surviving part of the head is square in cross-section and the middle part of the bow is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. This brooch is lozenge-shaped. The plate has two concentric steps with a concentric raised cell or panel at the centre containing blue enamel. The edges of the steps and the cell have similar punched marks as decoration. A round lug or lobe at the top and bottom has concentric circle indentations. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy flat, enamelled disc (sexfoil) plate brooch (AD 80-250).
Part of the plate, the spring, pin and part of the catch-plate are missing.
The front is decorated with a six-pointed star with concave arms around a single copper alloy pellet of reserved metal. The points of the star each terminate in a rounded knop. The areas inside and outside the star were probably enamelled but none can be seen.

A fragment of a Medieval silver-gilt boss/plaque from an annular brooch (c. 1300-c. 1350). Treasure case no. 2019 T1060.
This octofoil boss/plaque (15.0mm x 13.2mm) has alternating long and short petals forming a sub-lozenge shape. Each petal has a raised edge and an incuse centre. It is soldered to the frame (c. 2.0mm x c. 1.3mm) which may have been alternately twisted and plain.
Much of the gilding survives and the breaks are old.

A misshapen frame, lozenge-shaped in cross-section, with a constriction for the pin. To one side of the pin, the frame is of twisted cable pattern and within each twist is a line of granules. On the opposite side of the pin, the frame is plain. The tapering pin is slightly convex at the top and flat on the underside. On the top of the pin, between the loop and the shaft, there is a small transverse ridge.

A fragment of an Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy small long brooch (c. 450-c. 550).
This fragment is the foot which has a transverse break at the top. It is roughly lozenge-shaped in plan and terminates with a double lobe. At the front each lobe has a small circular pit as decoration. There is part of an off-centre catch-plate on the reverse.
The brooch is drab green with patches of a darker green patina. The break is old.
Length: 25.4mm; width: 12.3mm; width at lobes: 7.2mm; thickness: 1.5mm; thickness including catch-plate: 5.4mm. Weight: 2.46g.

This fragment is part of the bow. From a ragged break at the top, it tapers in width to a break at the bottom. At the top the width is 6.1mm and the width at the bottom is 1.6mm. The upper part has a longitudinal central ridge flanked by a groove on either side. Below this section are seven transverse parallel grooves.
This brooch is green and pitted and the breaks are old.
