An early-medieval silver penny of Aethelstan (924-39), Two-Line (horizontal) type (HT1 style; North 668) minted by Gisalmer. Ref: North 1994: 132-3.
The penny is missing approximately a third of its beaded outer edge, and there is an uneven crack running from the outer left hand edge to the centre of the coin just below the (on the obverse).
Obverse: +O AE (AE ligated) +ÐELSTAN REX; Small cross pattee
Reverse: GISIE (reversed S)/MER, three pellets above and below (Moneyer's name in two lines with three crosses between them)
Diameter: 22.9mm. Weight: 1.46g. DA=12:9.
