An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) cast white-metal 'Norse' clapper bell (c. 900-c. 1000). This bell is broadly conical in form with a relatively large rectangular suspension loop at the top. The body of the bell has seven facets of uneven size. Inside, at the apex, an iron loop is presumably for the suspension of a clapper. The outer surface is dull and silvery and the inner surface is largely covered with off-white corrosion products. An incomplete post-Medieval cast white metal spherical animal 'crotal' bell (1600-1800 AD). The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is 10.93mm high, 9.21mm wide and 2.86.mm thick and has circular perforation. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided equally by a horizontal circumferential joining rib. At either side of the suspension loop there is a circular sound hole. Prior to being broken there were two sound holes integral with a slit in the lower hemisphere. A fragment of a cast high tinned metal clapper bell of Modern date (c. 1800-c. 1900). Length: 51.5mm; width: 58.7mm; thickness: 2.6mm thick; weight: 46.96g. About 25% of the rim of the bell. The outer face is decorated with three parallel horizontal mouldings. When complete, the rim of the bell would have been approximately 82mm in diameter. Both faces are finely pitted. The five breaks are old. Similar bell fragments have been recorded from Freckenham Parish, Suffolk, Yarmouth Parish, Isle of Wight and Calbourne Parish, Isle of Wight. See Portable Ant…
