Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Palaeolithic lithic implement of uncertain date. The implement is sub-oval in plan, broadly sub-triangular in side view and has been 'rolled'. It has been made on a large flake as there may be a striking platform at one end. The dorsal face appears to be retouched around the edge and the removals are short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The ventral face is featureless. Each face has a patina which is orange as well as buff. This implement was found at the foot of cliffs in the inter-tidal zone following a cliff fall. It may have derived from the ancient river grave…

A complete Palaeolithic flint sub-cordate handaxe dating to the period c. 500,000 BC-c. 150,000 BC. This implement is asymmetrical (sub-triangular) in plan, lozengiform in side view and pointed oval in cross-section. It has a reversed S-shape profile. From the rounded tip, the sides flare outwards and downwards and then converge to the butt. It has been bi-facially flaked overall except where there is a small area of cortex at the butt end of the ventral face. This handaxe is in good condition and has a shiny reddish brown patina with some matt grey areas. The cortex is dark gre…

A large and complete Palaeolithic flint waste flake (500000 BC-10001 BC). This flake is sub-triangular in plan. It has a small portion of striking platform with a percussion scar. Ripples indicate the position of the striking platform. The undulating dorsal surface is completely covered with light brown cortex. The ventral surface is slightly convex, light orange and grey. Modern damage around the edges is probably due to it having been in the inter-tidal zone. Length: 117.5mm; width: 112.0mm; thickness: 32.6mm. Weight: c. 388.0g.

An incomplete Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe of 'Crude' form (500000 BC-180000 BC). Wymer Type G. This implement has lost most of its original manufactured surface probably having been subjected to intense cold. As a result, most of the surface is uneven. In plan, it is pointed at the distal end and rounded at the proximal end. The dorsal face is humped and the ventral face is flatter. On the ventral face, at the proximal end, there is a patch of buff/off-white patina. This handaxe is grey and blends to off-white with reddish staining in places. Length: 119.61mm; width: 68…

An incomplete Acheulian flint handaxe of the Lower Palaeolithic period (c. 480,000 BP-c. 130,000 BP). The implement is sub-oval in plan and the tip is missing, apparently as a result of gellifraction. Some material has been lost on one face near the butt end. It also has a number of hair-line fractures. It has been knapped overall and the butt is evenly rounded in plan. There is an off-centre sub-circular perforation which is a natural feature formed by the crystallisation around a former fossil sponge. On one face there is a small circular void that was also formerly occupied by a …

A complete flint object, possibly a handaxe of Palaeolithic date. In plan, the implement is ovate in form and in side view it has a pointed oval profile. Weight: 189.04g. This object has been tentatively identified as a handaxe. However, it may have been formed naturally.

Bi-facially worked and symmetrical in plan, the implement has a pointed tip and a rounded butt. The extreme point of the tip is missing due to an old break. The flake removals cover the whole of both faces. It is slightly "rolled", although this is hardly noticeable and the patination colour on both faces is generally off-white. Incomplete bi-facially worked flint implement, probably a hand-axe of probable Palaeolithic date. Length 121mm, width 64mm and 41mm thick. Weight 219.39g. The black patinated implement has several small modern breaks along the edges and the tip of the point is also broken and missing. However, this break appears to be old. Viewed in plan, it tapers towards a sharp point from the thick angular butt. Prior to damage the edges would have had a slightly "twisted" appearance. The surfaces are slightly "rolled", probably due to the action of the sand and shingle environment in which it wa…

Lithic implement, possibly an unfinished handaxe of probable Palaeolithic date (500,000 BC-10,000BC). Length 143mm, width 107mm and 48mm thick. Weight 762g. The implement has been fashioned from a large naturally fractured flake. The natural fracture of one side of the implement is flat. The other side which is convex has an off-white coloured cortex. The two ends of this side as well as both of the sides have been crudely knapped to form what could be described as a scraper. However, the size and shape are similar to that of some handaxes of this period. The side of the tool which is…

“Pointed” flint hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date (at least 40,000 years old). Length 124mm, maximum width 77mm and maximum thickness 37mm. Weight 346g. The implement has flaking scars overall and is plano-convex in cross-section. The more convex side is orange/grey patinated, whereas the less convex side is grey/black patinated. The implement is “rolled”, that is to say it has become smoothed to a certain extent from movement within its context during the Palaeolthic period. Alternatively, it could have become smooth as a result of its mobility in a recent sea-bed environme…

Greyish/off-white prehistoric flint implement in the form of a core which has been utilised as a hammer-stone. Length 92mm, width 64mm and 42mm thick. Weight 261.43g. Sub-triangular in cross-section at one end and tapering to a bi-facial point at the other end. The core has multiple knapping scars on two of the faces and also at the thicker end. The third face appears to have been formed by natural fracturing. Bruising along one edge is the result of the core being used as a hammer-stone. At the larger end a small area of cortex survives.
