The heart on the front decorated with applied filigree circles and knops radiating from the centre. The back flat with no sign of previously-attached bars or hooks, though the front right of the object suggests that a projecting element there has been torn away and lost. Length: 20 mm. It is not clear how the object was worn or used but its decoration suggests a close comparison with Tudor dress fittings with hooks and attachment bars. Heart-shaped dress fittings are not …

post-medieval silver fragment Round piece of silver sheet hammered into hemispherical shape, central hole. Possibly upper part of a bell for hawking or dress. Bells were worn as accessories to dress in the 15th C but surviving examples are usually made of base metal, see Egan and Pritchard, Dress Accessories, pp. 336-7. This artefact could also be part of a hawking bell, attached one to each leg of a hawk with leather rings so as to jangle when the hawk moved. Joseph Strutt describes hawking bells in his Sports and Pastimes of the People of England of 1801, p. 26. He explains that …

Crushed silver bell, made from silver sheet hammered into two hemispherical forms, soldered together, crushed at the point at which the loop for suspension would have been inserted. Compare examples in base metal found in dated London contexts, eg: G.Egan and F.Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, no. 1666, dated c1400-50. Similar bells were fashionable dress accessories in the 14th and 15th Centuries. This example can probably be dated to the 15th Century.

A Medieval/Post-Medieval silver double-ended dress fastener (14th - 16th century). Curator's report: Silver artefact finely made from twisted wire, two sharply pointed ends curved over to form an agraffe. They are sometimes decorated with applied plaques or decorative elements, see a four-pronged one with a Tudor rose, in TAR 2005, nos. 695, also a three-pronged one, no. 696, both dated by their decoration or related pictorial evidence to the la…
