Hollow-cast element now squashed inwards upon itself, originally of spherical or bulbous form. One side plain, the other with applied flowerhead decoration. Along one edge, an animal with wings, long tail and four legs, its head broken off. Entire surface gilt. 1.7 cm long. It is impossible to discern the original function and appearance of this object. It might possibly be part of a whistle, akin to the whistle from Horsey, Somerset, for which see Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 125, dated to 15-16th Century. Probably 16th Century. Treasure case 2009 T399 Description: Silver whistle, made of thin silver sheet, well-shaped mouthpiece, square opening, tapering to the end which has been broken off. Along the length of the whistle, five projecting flanges, in silver, these with traces of gilding. Dimensions: Length: 57.40mm, Width at mouthpiece: 9.21mm, Width at widest point, including decoration: 15.81mm, Weight: 6.12g Discussion: Date uncertain, but the unusual flanges suggest possibly 16th century date. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as…

A fragment of a silver sheet huntsman's whistle. The whistle is tapering in form and the widest end is broken and flattened. The slit on the top of the whistle is intact and there is an attached loop on the bottom. A maker's mark appears on the top of the whistle, perhaps DL in a shaped shield. The owner's initials underneath the mouthpiece are illegible. The whistle is probably 17th century and has parallels with a similar whistle in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9, no.242 from West Sussex. The length is 30.78mm and the width is 13.6mm.

post-medieval silver fragment from a drinking vessel Heavy, cast silver element with central section of a hinge at one end, curved middle section and crude curling scrolls at the other end forming a finial. Probably the central part of the thumbpiece on the lid of a drinking vessel. Similar elements are found on imported pottery drinking vessels, with silver mounts made in London: see for example an unmarked stoneware drinking pot in the V&A, of circa 1550-60, in which the cast thumbpiece is of much finer quality but has scrolls like this fragment, which however end in masks. A silver hawking ring, or 'vervel'. Several examples of similar type are in The British Museum, and others have been reported through the Treasure Act. All the evidence - including the script on the ring - suggest an early 17th Century date. Similar rings are illustrated in hawking treatises of 1619 and 1658 (see A.Dillon, "Six silver vervels", Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, 2nd series, IV, pp. 355-7). Compare the 17th Century ring drawn in DRG Gaimster and Sue Margeson, "A post-medieval silver hawking vervel", Norfolk Archaeology, XL, 1989, pp. 326-7. The ring has a plain…

Silver vervel or hawking ring; small silver ring of D-shaped section engraved on the outside in italic script: *At mounckton in dorsett. Hawking rings record the owner's name and sometimes their placeof residence, and were attached to the leather jesses on the birds legs which attached the bird to the block. The script and form of this ring can be compared with others in the BM collection and published examples from Norfolk and elsewhere. The vervel dates to the 17th Century.

Silver hawking vervel comprising a ring of rectangular section inscribed with Italic capitals on the outside with the owner's name: IAMES*BERKBE:* Vervels were used to attach the leather jesses on a hawk's legs to a leash. The form and the style of the inscription suggest a 17th Century date. For a flat vervel of this date see TAR 2003, no. 283. It is possible that the inscription refers to James Birkby (born before 1557 -1610), who served as MP from York in 1593 and 1597 and for several terms as sheriff of the city.

Silver artefact, round with stamped decoration on the front inlaid with glass paste, mostly missing and filled with earth and corrosion. It is obvious from evidence from the reverse that this was a brooch or a button, and it may have been laid into another larger object originally. Although originally submitted for treasure, the Post-Medieval and Modern curators have looked at it and are clear that the stamped decoration suggests a 19th Century date, and therefore this is not within the scope of the 1996 Treasure Act.

Post medieval silver(?) thimble made from sheet with turned over edge and slight dome. There are no decorative or other features to help date this object and the shape suggests a late date, post 1707, and that this may be a liner for a now missing thimble, possibly 19th Century. The find dates to later than 1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections The British Museum

Plain border demarcated by engraved lines, the body covered with waffle-shaped indentations applied on a lathe, leaving blank a small area in which are roughly incised the owner's initials, MA. Silver thimble, circular indentations over the body and top, two birds framing a cartouche designed for owner's initials. Worn and squashed. The best comparison is a thimble dating to the early 18th C from the collection of Edwin Holmes (Sotheby's South Kensington, London 31 May 1995, lot 61). It is probable that this thimble post-dates 1706 and it and therefore it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

This appears to be a smaller and more delicate version of the base metal or silver sword belt hooks of similar form, generally dated to the 16th Century, which have snakes instead of swans. This is obviously too delicate and fine for such a function but I would imagine it to be a belt or jewellery fitting, perhaps for a woman rather than a man.
