Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire

Report on post-medieval silver "ring" from Ilam, Staffordshire Silver band with grooves and O decoration. I see no reason why this should be finger ring and cannot discern its function. It is undiagnostic and there hard to date, but likely to be post 1708.

Broken terminal of bodkin-type dress pin, silver, broken at rectangular opening on shaft. Flattened quadrangular section, pierced at complete end with a foliate terminal. Late 17th Century, of a type frequently reported through the Treasure Act, see TAR 2005, no. 575 for an example. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton

S- shaped silver fastener in the form of two curving swan's heads joined with a transverse foliate band in the middle of the S. The back flat with signs of chasing. This appears to be a smaller and more delicate version of the base metal or silver sword belt hooks of similar form, generally dated to the 16th Century, which have snakes instead of swans. This is obviously too delicate and fine for such a function but I would imagine it to be a belt or jewellery fitting, perhaps for a woman rather than a man. The facture suggests to me an early post-medieval date, perhaps early 16th …

Post medieval silver(?) thimble made from sheet with turned over edge and slight dome. There are no decorative or other features to help date this object and the shape suggests a late date, post 1707, and that this may be a liner for a now missing thimble, possibly 19th Century. The find dates to later than 1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections The British Museum
