Silver hawking vervel comprising a ring of rectangular section inscribed with Italic capitals on the outside with the owner's name: IAMES*BERKBE:* Vervels were used to attach the leather jesses on a hawk's legs to a leash. The form and the style of the inscription suggest a 17th Century date. For a flat vervel of this date see TAR 2003, no. 283.
It is possible that the inscription refers to James Birkby (born before 1557 -1610), who served as MP from York in 1593 and 1597 and for several terms as sheriff of the city.
