Report on post-medieval silver-gilt dress fitting Circular dress fitting with pinked backplate and solid hemispherical centre, decorated with applied filigree circles and knops. On the back, soldering indicates location of original recurving hook. The shape, facture and ornament accords well with the hemispherical heads of Tudor dress pins, frequently reported through the Treasure Act. The lack of a rectangular bar attachment may indicate that this was one of a number of small but heavy dress ornaments rather than the conventional dress-hook of a type well-documented under the s…

Crushed silver bell, made from silver sheet hammered into two hemispherical forms, soldered together, crushed at the point at which the loop for suspension would have been inserted. Compare examples in base metal found in dated London contexts, eg: G.Egan and F.Pritchard, Dress Accessories, London 1991, no. 1666, dated c1400-50. Similar bells were fashionable dress accessories in the 14th and 15th Centuries. This example can probably be dated to the 15th Century.

S- shaped silver fastener in the form of two curving swan's heads joined with a transverse foliate band in the middle of the S. The back flat with signs of chasing. This appears to be a smaller and more delicate version of the base metal or silver sword belt hooks of similar form, generally dated to the 16th Century, which have snakes instead of swans. This is obviously too delicate and fine for such a function but I would imagine it to be a belt or jewellery fitting, perhaps for a woman rather than a man. The facture suggests to me an early post-medieval date, perhaps early 16th …
