"Report on post-medieval silver artefact from Tickhill, South Yorkshire, 2009 T543 Round silver artefact with central red cabochon stone or paste, held in petalled setting within an openwork filigree border. The artefact may originally have had projecting knops or attachment loops, now damaged. A post-medieval fragment of twisted silver wire with thistle-shaped gilt finial, approximately 4.0 cm long. The object, which has been examined by a number of British Museum curators in different fields, is hard to place and no parallels have yet been found for it. The thistle-shaped terminal is reminiscent of those on late 15th Century silver spoons, but these lack the twisted wire. A tentative dating to the 16th Century is proposed here until further evidence comes to light.
