S- shaped silver fastener in the form of two curving swan's heads joined with a transverse foliate band in the middle of the S. The back flat with signs of chasing. This appears to be a smaller and more delicate version of the base metal or silver sword belt hooks of similar form, generally dated to the 16th Century, which have snakes instead of swans. This is obviously too delicate and fine for such a function but I would imagine it to be a belt or jewellery fitting, perhaps for a woman rather than a man. The facture suggests to me an early post-medieval date, perhaps early 16th …

Late medieval or early post-medieval silver strap-fitting or belt chape, U-shaped, cast with scalloped lower edge, raised ridge and central hole, three smaller holes above, perpendicular-style edging across upper edge. On the back, two studs for attachments, mark made by metal file cleaning up the cast. Approximately 2cm across. The rear of the object is covered in the curving lines commonly seen on items cast in moulds made of cuttlefish bones. Compare an engraved gold example with St George and the Dragon in The British Museum (Prehistory and Europe 1991, 6-7, 1). The style of the o…

A fragment of a Medieval silver spoon comprising part of the slimly tapering stem of hexagonal section and small portion of fig-shaped bowl; knop (probably originally a wrythen-knop or acorn knop) broken off and missing at top. Approx 5.6 cm long. The form of stem and bowl suggest a mid to late 15th Century dating for this English spoon

Silver spoon stem, broken just above bowl and at terminal. Heavy stem of hexagonal section, punched on one side above bowl with three marks; possibly a Gothic B in a shield, an R in a shield, and another illegible mark. The crudeness and lack of London marks of Leopard's head crowned and lion passant indicate that this spoon is of provincial workmanship. Probably 17th century. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).

Post-medieval silver spoon Note on Oxford Archaeology North report: Having seen images and read the report on this object, my view is that this is a Christening spoon, not necessarily of English make. The ones in the literature readily available to me are inscribed with names and dated late 17th or early 18thC: see spoon dated 1718 and another dated 1699 in Klaus Marquardt, Eight Centuries of European Knives, Forks and Spoons, Stuttgart 2997, figs. 301 and 305. This does not mean that earlier ones do not exist, perhaps in the V&A collection, unknown to me. These late dated spo…
