Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex

Silver-gilt bell, hemispherical, delicately made of silver-gilt sheet, engraved with panels of flower sprays and remains of attachment loop at the top. At the edge, inscription in Roman capitals with traces of white enamel and foliate sprays, reading in French POUR*UNE*SEULE ("for one alone.")
Possibly a hawking bell, of the kind attached to hawk's legs by means of a leather bewit. A pair of bells were used, making a shrill sound a semitone apart from each other. They were often made in Milan or Dordrecht. Silver added to the metal made for a sweet tone, echoed in Shakespeare's "Ho…

Report on post-medieval dress fitting from `Saxton' N. Yorkshire 2008 T726
"Silver dress fitting comprising a flower head, cast. On the back one simple loop, no signs of a bar fitting.
Probably 16th Century. The simple loop suggests this may have been a cap hook rather than a hooked tag, of the kind worn on men's caps around 1480-1580 in England. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Silver seal-die with fluted handle with paired scrolls and single loop handle. Octagonal die engraved with a shield with 3 crosses, 2 above and 1 below a central transverse band which is stippled. The silver appears to be low-grade.
Probably 18th Century and may post-date 1708. As such it is impossible to say with confidence that the seal-die is over 300 years old, and it therefore fails to qualify as Treasure in terms of the Treasure Act 1996.

Coarse coiled silver-coloured ring of quadrangular section, widening in the middle and tapering at the end with small finials. This puzzling object is undiagnostic, as it is too coarse for an earring and too small for a nosering for an animal. Analysis results reveal that is made of 97% silver. I find it hard to place or date and would suggest that it is likely to be of fairly recent manufacture.
