Treasure Case 2009 T607 British Museum Report: Fragment of openwork silver, roughly hemispherical in shape, with filigree circlets and granular knops on one side, the inside flat. Weight: 2.43g, length: 24.4 mm. Probably part of a 16th Century dress fitting such as a button, head of a dress pin or bead, but possibly later. A Post Medieval tin button dating early 18th century. Curator's report: Description: flat disc like button, cast with decoration moulded in relief. On the front a sun's face within twelve rays. On the back in relief maker's mark 'IL' on either side of the missing shank. Discussion: Compare an identical button found on the river Thames foreshore, London. See Brian Read 'Metal buttons c900-1700', Langport 2010, No 480. These are dated possibly late 17th or early 18th century. TREASURE CASE : 2004 T190 A silver toothpick, broken along the shaft. The pick in the shape of a bird's talon, emerging from the fleshy part of a bird's claw, etched with lines to imitate skin at the point where the talon joins the claw. The shaft is of engraved foliate form with transverse banding. Length: 4.4cm approx. Silver dress fitting, made in one plane with circular central plate with relief-moulded design of a flowerhead and one large attachment loop at base and two smaller ones on either side. Gilt. Signs of chasing on reverse. Measures 13.7mm long, 12.8mm wide, 2mm thick and weighs 1.38g. Related to, but not identical to, a type of dress fitting reported through the Treasure Act in which a flat element like this has a wire loop soldered onto the reverse, see TAR 2005-6 nos.700 and 701, and to surviving dress fittings in copper alloy. A Post Medieval silver buckle probably dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. Oval buckle frame, with bevelled internal edges creating a domed effect with hollow reverse. Separate cross bar which is missing, the sockets where it would attach to the frame are filled with rust, suggesting the original cross bar was iron.
