A Post Medieval - Modern silver cufflink (18th century). The cufflink comprises two octagonal discs with a loop on each reverse and an interconnecting oval link securing the two discs. Each of the discs has a concave reverse and the front surface is decorated with an engraved pattern. The pattern has a central motif of a six pointed star burst of radiating lines within a scalloped border. There is no maker's mark visible on the link. Dora Thornton confirms this is less than 300 years old and so does not fall under the Treasure Act. Dimensions: Diameter of each disc: 9.65mm; length: 20…

Treasure case 2009 T141.
Decorative silver arrow head terminal, made from thin silver sheet and therefore a purely decorative element from some larger ensemble. Perhaps the arrow attribute of a silver figure of a saint such as St Michael?
Late medieval or early modern, perhaps 16th Century.
As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A Post Medieval gold pin head (16th century).
Curator's report: Small, heavy gold pin head with hole for attachment to a gold wire. The hemispherical head squashed flat, decorated with applied filigree circlets and knops, and with flower heads made up of small turquoises (identified by Raman spectroscopy) held in claw settings and surrounded by petals of openwork gold decoration made of fine twisted wire.
This fascinating pin head suggests the gold prototypes for the silver-gilt types of the 16th Century which are commonly reported through the Treasure Act. Its e…

One disc from a pair of octagonal silver cufflinks. One disc and the joining loop survive. The disc is octagonal and is decorated with an octangonal border of concave incised lines and a central flower (rose?). The reverse of the disc is slightly hollow and has an integral central loop. A bent oval joining loop is attached to the loop on the reverse of this disc. The oval loop is broken at one end. There are no visible hallmarks, but this design of cufflink was popular at the end of the 17th century into the early 18th century. Since the object cannot be securely dated to pre 1700, it…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Post-Medieval silver stud with silver top and copper alloy stem. The top of the surface of the silver stud impressed with two circular rings with a seated fox at the centre. Given the fox perhaps part of dress or equipment used in fox hunting. Dating is difficult though this is definitely post-medieval and probably post-Treasure
Due to the nature of the find it can not be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Silver thimble, circular indentations over the body and top, two birds framing a cartouche designed for owner's initials. Worn and squashed.
The best comparison is a thimble dating to the early 18th C from the collection of Edwin Holmes (Sotheby's South Kensington, London 31 May 1995, lot 61).
It is probable that this thimble post-dates 1706 and it and therefore it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A gold fragment of an artefact of an undiagnostic date. The fragment comprises a loop made from a flat strip of gold from which two broken strands project creating an incomplete figure of eight in appearance. At the junction between the strip and the broken projections an incomplete cinquefoil has been soldered to the front. The surface of the strip is decoratively cast with a twisted rope motif.
Dora Thornton and Judy Rudoe has had a look at this and they can't place what it is but believe it is undiagnostic.

Silver button comprising domed upper part made from sheet with milled edge and stamped central decoration of a flowerhead; shank applied on centre at back. Form, facture and decoration suggest a 17th century dating. However this may be all that remains of a pair of cufflinks which would date this object much later, to the late 17th or even early 18th century (see 2006 T459). An amended and more cautious dating would probably be late 17th Century.
In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure…

Treasure Number: 2010 T77
"Description: Silver shoe buckle. Rectangular, slightly curved. The frame decorated with moulding resembling that in a carved picture frame. Would have had a separate iron spindle which is now missing. On the back, a hallmark with lion passant.
The lion passant mark suggests this belt buckle was made in Birmingham, apparently after 1773, which is when that mark came into use there. Therefore this item does not qualify as Treasure.
The find dates to later than 1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.
