TREASURE CASE : 2004 T483 Post-medieval silver-gilt dress pin of trefoil form applied with three hemispherical bosses. The bosses are decorated with filigree decoration and knops. Hole at centre of trefoil-shaped backplate indicates that there was originally a separate flower-head element on the front, attached to the backplate with a butterfly clip, as seen in Dora Thornton and David Mitchell, "Three silver Tudor dress-hooks", The Antiquaries Journal 83 2003, p. 490 for similar hook with maker's mark from Petersfield, Hampshire. Front is gilded. Original hook and bar plate now …

Treasure case: 2007 T182 Silver dress fitting, cast as one element. Round and with radiating petals in the form or a Tudor rose with projecting knops; traces of gilding on the front. On the back remains of a single hook, indicating that this may have been a cap hook in which the hook doubled back on itself. For a comparable cap hook, with recurving hook still in situ, but with scene of the Crucifixion, see Treasure Annual Report 2003, fig. 240 from Raydon, Suffolk. 16th Century. Silver hawking vervel comprising a ring of rectangular section inscribed with Italic capitals on the outside with the owner's name: IAMES*BERKBE:* Vervels were used to attach the leather jesses on a hawk's legs to a leash. The form and the style of the inscription suggest a 17th Century date. For a flat vervel of this date see TAR 2003, no. 283. It is possible that the inscription refers to James Birkby (born before 1557 -1610), who served as MP from York in 1593 and 1597 and for several terms as sheriff of the city.

The shaft is of engraved foliate form with transverse banding. Length: 4.4cm approx. Post medieval silver(?) thimble made from sheet with turned over edge and slight dome. There are no decorative or other features to help date this object and the shape suggests a late date, post 1707, and that this may be a liner for a now missing thimble, possibly 19th Century. The find dates to later than 1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections The British Museum

S- shaped silver fastener in the form of two curving swan's heads joined with a transverse foliate band in the middle of the S. The back flat with signs of chasing. This appears to be a smaller and more delicate version of the base metal or silver sword belt hooks of similar form, generally dated to the 16th Century, which have snakes instead of swans. This is obviously too delicate and fine for such a function but I would imagine it to be a belt or jewellery fitting, perhaps for a woman rather than a man. The facture suggests to me an early post-medieval date, perhaps early 16th …

Potential Treasure find: Silver Thimble (2005 T553) The thimble is very hard to date, given that it is squashed out of shape, form being the most useful indicator of date. It might consequently be medieval or alternatively (and in my view more likely) 18th century. I therefore suggest that it should be regarded as undiagnostic and removed from the Treasure process.
