Silver thimble, circular indentations over the body and top, two birds framing a cartouche designed for owner's initials. Worn and squashed. The best comparison is a thimble dating to the early 18th C from the collection of Edwin Holmes (Sotheby's South Kensington, London 31 May 1995, lot 61). It is probable that this thimble post-dates 1706 and it and therefore it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

CURATOR'S REPORT Post-medieval silver thimble from Brailes, Warwickshire Description of find Silver thimble made from sheet soldered along the edges, elongated shape. The body and most of the dome punched with regular waffle-shaped indentations to suggest working on a lathe; lathe centring mark at top of the dome. Stepped design in broad bands left in reserve on the body. Plain rim, engraved with inscription in Roman capitals: LOOSE NO TIME. Maker's mark of an L clear on inside. Discussion The mis-spelt inscription may imply that the thimble was made in Holland for the Engli…

Potential Treasure find: Silver Thimble (2005 T553) The thimble is very hard to date, given that it is squashed out of shape, form being the most useful indicator of date. It might consequently be medieval or alternatively (and in my view more likely) 18th century. I therefore suggest that it should be regarded as undiagnostic and removed from the Treasure process. A silver thimble with waffle-shaped indentations but with pattern of linked cables left plain; plain band at part of the rim and plain disc at central point of dome. The thimble is in excellent condition, apart from one scratch running around it just below the dome. Given the regularity and depth of the indentations, the thimble may have been made on a lathe rather than punched by hand. Unmarked. Length approx 2.9 cm. Silver thimbles were used increasingly by the European nobility and gentry during the 17th Century but surviving examples are rare given that thimbles were much used and…
