Treasure report from Dr Dora Thornton: Five identical silver mounts, each circular with central hole, etched with petal pattern, on the back three studs for attachment onto textile or leather. Presumably from a belt, probably 16th Century fittings.

Treasure Case 2008 T757 "Hollow silver sheet bent into a circle, one side with engraved ornament of leaves and scrolls. It has been suggested that this may have been the mount for a scent bottle made of some other material, or perhaps a pomander, but this is only a hypothesis. The engraving style however suggests a 16th or 17th Century date, though this too is tentative. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections"

CURATOR'S REPORT A Post Medieval silver incomplete mount probably dating to the 16th century. Description Silver decorative mount, two vegetal scrolls with two small holes for attachment within the design. Back flat and tooled. Left side slightly damaged and possibly other elements missing. Probably 16th Century, and part of a larger artefact, such as a dagger chape, or perhaps as it is, a mount for a leather or textile belt. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

British Museum report (Dora Thornton): "Silver dress mount, cast in form of a bird, possibly a pelican, plucking at a heart held in its claws. The bird bends it neck down to form an attachment loop in addition to the stud on the reverse. Probably 17th Century, but just possibly later, given the dating of associated ceramics found nearby."
