Two silver hollow hemispherical elements, each with a central hole. Each side is incised with a leaf or floral design which continues from one side to the other, and the pieces fit together to show how they were originally joined to form a hemisphere pierced at either side. The function of this object is not clear. Possibly the remains of a button, in which the loop, now missing, had a shank which joined both elements with a knop at the end. Otherwise perhaps a decorative dress fitting sewn onto a garment? The etched design suggests a roughly 16th-17th Century date. As such, due…

"Report on post-medieval silver artefact from Tickhill, South Yorkshire, 2009 T543 Round silver artefact with central red cabochon stone or paste, held in petalled setting within an openwork filigree border. The artefact may originally have had projecting knops or attachment loops, now damaged. On the back, the filigree openwork can be seen clearly, central smaller silver roundel with remains of an attachment loop. This artefact may have been a button, in which case the filigree in silver can be compared with two silver buttons recently reported, 2009 T374 and 2009 T462, which can be …

Post-medieval silver button or cufflink element etched on the front with a flowerhead. Shank on the reverse. Diameter 13.8 mm, weight o.72g. Probably a cufflink rather than a button given its size, weight and design, which suggests an early 18th Century date and possibly post 1709. Therefore, in all probability, this item is not Treasure, as defined by the Treasure Act 1996.
