Object type: CUFF LINK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A gold cufflink, one, of a pair of cufflinks, of eighteenth or nineteenth century date, AD 1750 - 1900. The frames of both discs or elements and the linking strip survive.
Each disc was oval and made of a separate material which no longer survives. Each has an oval gold mount or frame which is a reeded strip formed into a loop, with six projecting lugs which would have clipped to the missing part. Each frame has an integral, flat central strip connecting the short sides across the back of the disc. On the reverse of each strip is a hemispherical loop. One frame appears to be the or…

A gold jewellery fitting of Post-Medieval date, 16th-17th century.
Dora Thornton of the British Museum writes:
'The main body of the artefact is made of thin gold wire, each end recurving on itself to create a loop and the form is of a long bodied s-shape. Attached at one of these looped ends are a further two gold wire loops (so forming a chain link). A five pronged circular shape (akin to an opened umbrella) has been threaded through the main body to the other end and has been soldered on at the base of the loop. At the end of each prong is circular opening. This element has bee…

Gold pendant, circular with two suspension loops at top. On the front, a central pale blue stone within a border keyed for enamel, most of the enamel now missing and the design consequently indistinct. Traces of white and red enamel remain. The edges similarly keyed for enamel with scrolling foliage. The back is decorated with enamel white, green, black and red with a design of a bird in foliage.
This pendant has been reassigned to me by the medieval and the modern curators in this Department. I cannot place it in my curatorial area and would suggest that it is either orien…

Treasure case 2009 T518: Declared not Treasure
Description: Gold spherical finial, centrally pierced for attachment to a pin, decorated with large gold wire circlets each containing a glass/paste cabochon, some of these now missing. Probably from a hat pin or dress pin. Facture indicates a 19th or even early 20th Century date.
Discussion: The find dates to later than 1708 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A Post Medieval gold pin head (16th century).
Curator's report: Small, heavy gold pin head with hole for attachment to a gold wire. The hemispherical head squashed flat, decorated with applied filigree circlets and knops, and with flower heads made up of small turquoises (identified by Raman spectroscopy) held in claw settings and surrounded by petals of openwork gold decoration made of fine twisted wire.
This fascinating pin head suggests the gold prototypes for the silver-gilt types of the 16th Century which are commonly reported through the Treasure Act. Its e…

A Post Medieval gold button dating to the late 15th - very early 16th century. Hazel Forsyth: There are others of a similar type in the Chalcis Treasure.
Identification by Hazel Forsyth, Senior Post Medieval Curator, Museum of London
Curator's report: Gold artefact, originally a thin cylinder of gold now squashed flat, with two bands of filigree decoration, filigree openwork terminal with traces of enamel.
This highly-decorated artefact is difficult to identify and date. It has been suggested that this is the lower part of an earring, but it could also have been pa…

A Post Medieval - possibly Modern gold button (late 16th - early 19th century).
Small gold button in the shape of a flowerhead, perhaps a daisy, with solid centre and petals forming shallow compartments filled with a composition, perhaps glass inlay, some of which is now missing. Single loop attachment in gold at the centre of the back. Approximately 0.7 cm diameter.
This naturalistic flowerhead button is difficult to place. The fine tooling on front suggests age and the working at the back, together with uneven outline, suggests that it has been hand cut not stamped. The …

A gold fragment of an artefact of an undiagnostic date. The fragment comprises a loop made from a flat strip of gold from which two broken strands project creating an incomplete figure of eight in appearance. At the junction between the strip and the broken projections an incomplete cinquefoil has been soldered to the front. The surface of the strip is decoratively cast with a twisted rope motif.
Dora Thornton and Judy Rudoe has had a look at this and they can't place what it is but believe it is undiagnostic.

2007 T450 The British Museum Curator's report describes the object as: "Small decorative stud, probably part of a drop-style earring imitating Roman examples. A circular convex rosette has a central protruding knop and is surrounded by a flat circular strip. A border surrounds this and has been marked with indents to give the appearance of beaded wire. The piece is surmounted by three small flattened knops, each with a similar border as the main section. This is typical of 19th-century archaeological jewellery and is therefore not Treasure. N.
