Two silver hollow hemispherical elements, each with a central hole. Each side is incised with a leaf or floral design which continues from one side to the other, and the pieces fit together to show how they were originally joined to form a hemisphere pierced at either side. The function of this object is not clear. Possibly the remains of a button, in which the loop, now missing, had a shank which joined both elements with a knop at the end. Bells were worn as accessories to dress in the 15th C but surviving examples are usually made of base metal, see Egan and Pritchard, Dress Accessories, pp. 336-7. Post medieval silver(?) thimble made from sheet with turned over edge and slight dome. There are no decorative or other features to help date this object and the shape suggests a late date, post 1707, and that this may be a liner for a now missing thimble, possibly 19th Century. CURATOR'S REPORT Post-medieval silver thimble from Brailes, Warwickshire Description of find Silver thimble made from sheet soldered along the edges, elongated shape. The body and most of the dome punched with regular waffle-shaped indentations to suggest working on a lathe; lathe centring mark at top of the dome. Stepped design in broad bands left in reserve on the body. Plain rim, engraved with inscription in Roman capitals: LOOSE NO TIME. Maker's mark of an L clear on inside. Potential Treasure find: Silver Thimble (2005 T553) The thimble is very hard to date, given that it is squashed out of shape, form being the most useful indicator of date. It might consequently be medieval or alternatively (and in my view more likely) 18th century. I therefore suggest that it should be regarded as undiagnostic and removed from the Treasure process.
