Report on post-medieval silver dress hook from Chilton Trinity, Somerset - 2008 T96 Silver dress hook in the form of a book, with projecting knops and a foliate tendril at the top with recurving hook soldered onto the back. On the backplate, rectangular bar for attachment, soldered on. The front section parcel-gilt (partly gilded). A type of post-medieval dress hook frequently reported through the Treasure Act and sometimes found in pairs. Silver artefact, heart-shaped, with back plate onto which a cushioned heart-shaped element has been soldered. The heart on the front decorated with applied filigree circles and knops radiating from the centre. The back flat with no sign of previously-attached bars or hooks, though the front right of the object suggests that a projecting element there has been torn away and lost. Length: 20 mm. Silver seal die, fluted handle with terminal pierced three times, the face engraved with a three-masted sailing ship. Seal die itself approx 1.4 cm diameter. Probably 17th Century, as indicated both by the ship and the form of the seal.

Silver lozenge-shaped bead, hollow, with integral suspension loop and ring; hole at other end. Decorated with applied filigree circles and loops. Though the decoration is reminiscent of that found on 16th Century dress pins reported through the Treasure Act, this object seems to me to be machine-made and consequently much later in date. The form suggests a 19th Century date and my guess is that this is part of an ear-ring of relatively recent manufacture. It does not therefore come under the 1996 Treasure Act (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).

A post-medieval silver seal matrix with fluted handle, three transverse bands and suspension loop. The seal is engraved with a shield with a single diagonal band with three stars and crest with mantling above. The form of the seal-die and the style of the mantling suggests an 18th century date, not necessarily pre-1707. The seal-die cannot be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).
