A gold cufflink, one, of a pair of cufflinks, of eighteenth or nineteenth century date, AD 1750 - 1900. The frames of both discs or elements and the linking strip survive. Each disc was oval and made of a separate material which no longer survives. Each has an oval gold mount or frame which is a reeded strip formed into a loop, with six projecting lugs which would have clipped to the missing part. Each frame has an integral, flat central strip connecting the short sides across the back of the disc. On the reverse of each strip is a hemispherical loop. One frame appears to be the or…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A sheet silver ferrule dating from post 1710. The flattened ferrule is made form a sheet of silver rolled into a tube with butt seam. There is a thickened collar at each end and the tube tapers. It is decorated by being pressed with a border of large flowers at the top, and a main design of a large swag of draped fabric or curtains. In the opinion of Dora Thornton, the fitting is less than 300 years old, so does not need to be declared under the 1996 Treasure Act despite being made of silver.

One disc from a pair of octagonal silver cufflinks. One disc and the joining loop survive. The disc is octagonal and is decorated with an octangonal border of concave incised lines and a central flower (rose?). The reverse of the disc is slightly hollow and has an integral central loop. A bent oval joining loop is attached to the loop on the reverse of this disc. The oval loop is broken at one end. There are no visible hallmarks, but this design of cufflink was popular at the end of the 17th century into the early 18th century. Since the object cannot be securely dated to pre 1700, it…

Treasure case: 2007 T182 Silver dress fitting, cast as one element. Round and with radiating petals in the form or a Tudor rose with projecting knops; traces of gilding on the front. On the back remains of a single hook, indicating that this may have been a cap hook in which the hook doubled back on itself. For a comparable cap hook, with recurving hook still in situ, but with scene of the Crucifixion, see Treasure Annual Report 2003, fig. 240 from Raydon, Suffolk. 16th Century. Treasure Case 2008 T757 "Hollow silver sheet bent into a circle, one side with engraved ornament of leaves and scrolls. It has been suggested that this may have been the mount for a scent bottle made of some other material, or perhaps a pomander, but this is only a hypothesis. The engraving style however suggests a 16th or 17th Century date, though this too is tentative. Silver seal-die with fluted handle with paired scrolls and single loop handle. Octagonal die engraved with a shield with 3 crosses, 2 above and 1 below a central transverse band which is stippled. The silver appears to be low-grade. Probably 18th Century and may post-date 1708. As such it is impossible to say with confidence that the seal-die is over 300 years old, and it therefore fails to qualify as Treasure in terms of the Treasure Act 1996. A single loop of twisted silver wire is soldered to the back so as to form three eyes for attachment. This object is difficult to place. Post-medieval silver spoon Note on Oxford Archaeology North report: Having seen images and read the report on this object, my view is that this is a Christening spoon, not necessarily of English make. The ones in the literature readily available to me are inscribed with names and dated late 17th or early 18thC: see spoon dated 1718 and another dated 1699 in Klaus Marquardt, Eight Centuries of European Knives, Forks and Spoons, Stuttgart 2997, figs. 301 and 305. This does not mean that earlier ones do not exist, perhaps in the V&A collection, unknown to me. These late dated spo…

Silver thimble, circular indentations over the body and top, two birds framing a cartouche designed for owner's initials. Worn and squashed. The best comparison is a thimble dating to the early 18th C from the collection of Edwin Holmes (Sotheby's South Kensington, London 31 May 1995, lot 61). It is probable that this thimble post-dates 1706 and it and therefore it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Silver thimble, missing its domed top, now flattened in shape and open along its original soldered join. Plain border demarcated by engraved lines, the body covered with waffle-shaped indentations applied on a lathe, leaving blank a small area in which are roughly incised the owner's initials, MA. A maker's mark, apparently IB above a pellet, is also stamped into the sheet, now very worn. Length: 1.2 cm. Form, facture and engraving suggest a late 17th C or possibly early 18th C date, but cannot be proven to be pre- 1706 and may not therefore fall within the scope of the Treasure A…

post-medieval silver fragment from a drinking vessel Heavy, cast silver element with central section of a hinge at one end, curved middle section and crude curling scrolls at the other end forming a finial. Probably the central part of the thumbpiece on the lid of a drinking vessel. Similar elements are found on imported pottery drinking vessels, with silver mounts made in London: see for example an unmarked stoneware drinking pot in the V&A, of circa 1550-60, in which the cast thumbpiece is of much finer quality but has scrolls like this fragment, which however end in masks.
