The object consists of a D shaped buckle which has a loop with steeply angled curved edge, the outer surface of which has several incised lines running across its surface. The plate is quite damaged but is held in place by a single large circular rivet, 5mm in diameter, placed centrally behind the pin. The pin sits centrally on the straight edge of the loop and is flanked by two rectangular 'hinges' which hold the loop onto the plate. It is decorated with at least one line of small triangular incisions along its long edges. The buckle dates to 1250-1500 and is similar to example 63 p.19 in Whitehead, R: Buckles 1250-1800.

The object is good condition with a brown patina and weighs 6.24 grams. The loop is circular in section and form and emerges from a semi-circular sectioned, rectangular shaped plate. The loop has a small semi-circular recess above an integral bar with a circular hole below it to contain the pin. This is folded around the bar and tapers to a point. It has a semi-circular section and is bright green in colour. The plate has two intact copper alloy rivets, one at each end. It terminates with a raised area which is sub semi-circular in form and has two small sub triangular protrusions at each upper corner. The rounded end contains a short rectangular protrusion. This may be an attempt at an animal head terminal, but more likely the protrusion is the tip of a hook which would have attached this buckle onto a spur arm. Most of the buckles of this sort are thought to be spur buckles, although the more decorated examples could have other uses, perhaps part of a horse harness ? Medieval copper-alloy buckle fragment, 25mm long, 24mm wide and 5mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a green patina and weighs 4.89g. The object consists of a sub-rectangular plate, which has a circular hole and transverse ridge at one end and a circular-sectioned fragment of frame protruding at right angles at the other. The plate has a rectangular recess which holds a fragment of hinged tapering copper-alloy pin rotating on a separate copper-alloy bar.
This buckle is of T-shaped form. Compare similar buckles at NLM-369C73, SUR-C74125, SUR-1B596F, NMS-039367, DENO-4B97A8, WAW-B672C5, NARC-F0DCF6, etc. A pair of these buckles is recorded at NCL-5D3D67, with a copper-alloy wire link passing through their loops. Pairs of similar buckles, but with hinged ends rather than loops, are recorded at HESH-132E83 and BERK-703D40 still attached to swivels which can be dated to the 13th or 14th century. It seems likely that these buckles had a specialist use, perhaps in pairs on animal leashes.
