Medieval copper alloy chafing dish handle, 1100-1500, Length: 45 mm, width: 15 mm, weight: 19.17 grams. The handle is L shaped and has a rectangular cross section. It passes through a circular hole in the centre of an oval shaped, rectangular cross sectioned lug, which has a flat circular projection on its narrower end to fix it to a vessel.

Medieval copper alloy handle lug from a chafing dish, 22mm long, 15mm wide and 8mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 13.33 grams. The object is oval in form and rectangular in cross section. It consists of a thick oval plate with a circular hole (which would have taken the handle) in its centre. The plate has a straight lower edge with a slight triangular projection to one side. Below the straight edge is a recessed circular projection which would have been inserte d into the body of the vessel.

Medieval to post medieval (AD c.1300-c.1600) copper alloy handle lug from a chafing dish, 21.5mm long, 16mm wide, 7mm thick and weighing 11.38g. The object consists of a thick, slightly elongated loop with a collared knop at one end. The surface of the object has a dark brown patina, worn away inside the loop, with many small scratches and patches of orange and white corrosion. The object is triangular in form and sub rectangular in section and has a short circular shaft at its narrow end to hold a lug. The lug is circular in form and rectangular in section with a small rectangular shaft. It has an off centre circular hole, attaching it to the handle.

The object consists of a sub-circular sectioned handle which has a right angled bend. Attached to the handle is an oval shaped fitting which has a rectangular section. This has a circular hole through which the handle is attached. This fitting would be attached to the body of the vessel.

Medieval copper alloy handle, 44mm wide and 51mm long. The object consists of a shaped bar which begins as a rectangle 30mm wide and 21mm deep. One side curves outwards at a right angle for 20mm before turning 90o and continuing for 20mm at which point the object has snapped. The whole bar has chamfered edges and is 6mm wide. The object is roughly oval in form and rectangular in cross section, with a circular aperture in the centre which is 6mm in diameter. This copper alloy object would have formed part of a chafing dish handle. These were used to heat food by placing dishes on charcoal or hot water contained in the chafing dish. It is 85mm long, 8mm wide and square in profile for one third of its length and 12-14mm wide and flat for the remainder. The lower, square section has one rivet hole with rivet intact in the centre, 10mm in. This would have fastened it to the side of the dish.
