Roman or early medieval? glass bead, 20mm in diameter and 10mm wide. The object is in fair condition and weighs 3.86grams. It has an irregular circular form with a circular section and irregular sub-triangular void, 8mm across. It is made from dark cobalt blue glass and has a small chip missing from its outer surface. Beads of this material and colour are usually dated to the Roman period here, but it may also be early medieval in date. This particular example is similar to beads found at Morningthorpe Anglo-Saxon Cemetery.

The bead is circular in form and eliptical in cross section and has a pale greenish colour. The form could suggest a possible early medieval date?

Two blue glass beads,
Opaque pale blue 8mm thick, 12mm diameter and weighing 1.37grams.
Dark blue, 6mm thick, 9mm in diameter and weighing 0.97grams.
The form and colouration suggest they could be of some age, but these are very difficult to date. Iron age to medieval?

Early Medieval? glass bead fragment, 12mm long, 8mm wide and 4mm thick. The bead is a pale blue colour and has a circular section with a series of ridges running along its surface radiating around the central hole.

Bronze age? gold bead or bracelet fragment, 11mm long, 4mm wide and 2mm thick with a weight of 0.25g. The object is rectangular in form and sub circular in cross section. It consists of a rectangular fragment of worked sheet which has been folded up to make a bead? It has one clear complete plain edge then the body has a series of parallel indented lines about 0.5mm apart, running across its body to an incomplete edge. Post Medieval cast copper alloy spherical or 'crotal' bell, 29mm in diameter and 40mm long with a weight of 24.34g. The bell is in good condition with an integral rectangular suspension loop. There are two circular sound holes in the upper half and a slot in the lower half, which also has an engraved petal-like pattern and the initials AG.

Roman copper alloy bell, 28mm high and 25mm in diameter with a weight of 8.16grams.
The bell is sub conical in form with a large integral sub rectangular suspension loop. The body has a line of triangular cut outs arranged with alternate alignments so they form a 'zig-zag' band along the centre of the body.
The bell has been compared to a solid example from Crummy's Colchester report and is similar to several examples on the database, most closely, NMS- E88365 and BH-9C5145.

Medieval or later white metal bell? fragment, 21mm in diameter and 21mm long. The object is in poor condition and weighs 13.47grams. The object consists of the remains of a circular sectioned 'cup'l with a flat upper edge. There is a rectangular fixing loop in the centre of the upper edge, which appear to be roughly cast. The bell has a silver appearance but is probably due to a tin/lead rich alloy.

Medieval copper alloy bell, 20mm in diameter and 18mm high. The bell is in good condition with a brown patina and weighs 7.27grams. The bell is sub-spherical in form with a conical lower half. The upper half has a plain suspension loop which is semi-circular in form and section and sits above a circular hole. The upper half of the bell is decorated with incised lines, which criss-cross each other at a 45o angle and are contained within an incised horizontal border. There is a further hole in the end of the conical section, but this may be damage.

Post Medieval silver bell, 17mm long and 14mm in diameter. The bell is in good condition with a silver patina and weighs 3.50 grams, including its pea.
It is circular in form with a rope effect raised border aorund its centre, where the two halves have been soldered together. It has an intact, rectangular sectioned, circular loop.

Roman or Medieval copper alloy bell, 34mm high and 34mm in diameter. The bell is in good condition, has an even green patina and weighs 30.72 grams. The bell consists of a slightly elongated semi-sphere which is plain and has thick walls. It has an integral rectangular sectioned, circular loop. The centre of its inside retains traces of an iron clapper and the bell gives a good tone when struck. The lack of any decoration makes it difficult to date.

Post Medieval copper alloy crotal bell, 39mm long and 31mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a green patina and weighs 52 grams. The bell is intact and has a rectangular shaped suspension loop. It is seperated into two halves by a rounded central ridge with the upper half having scalloped decoration and the lower half being covered with small scales. The long thin slit in the bottom is flanked by two raised heart shaped motifs.

Medieval lead alloy pilgrims bell, 48mm high, 35mm wide and 11mm thick. The bell is in a fair condition with a grey patina and weighs 15.99 grams. The bell has been squashed slightly and has a flared trapezoidal form with a eliptical section. The bell has a narrow raised border about half way up. There are the remains of small suspension loop squashed into the upper surface.

Post Medieval copper alloy crotal bell, 37mm high and 29mm in diameter. The bell is in poor condition with a green/red patina and weighs 25 grams. The bell is circular in form with a ridge around its middle where it was joined together. It has a small slit with circular edges in its lower surface and a circular hole in its upper. There is no obvious sign of decoration on the bell but its has a rectangular suspension loop which indicates a 16th century or later date.

Medieval/post medieval Copper bell with integral loop, 40mm in diameter and 40mm high. The bell has a dark grey patina and has a domed shape with flaring edges. It is decorated with two incised lines forming a border near the lower edge. The loop, which has been roughly filed, is leaf shaped with a small circular hole in its centre. The bell has no internal fixings but it has traces of iron on the surface.

Medieval lead alloy suspension loop, 19mm long, 15mm wide, 8mm thick and with a weight of 11.16 grams. The object has a greyish patina with shiny silver patches. The suspension loop has a rounded upper surface with a central hole, 4mm in diameter. It tapers in thickness, becoming narrow at the top, from 8mm to 4mm. Attached to the loop is a roughly rectangular piece of metal, 18x16mmm and 3mm thick. The loop is probably from a bell and may be medieval.
