Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. 11th century). A large part of the left hand side of the mount (when viewed from the front oriented to the creatures depicted upright) has broken away, but it is clear that the mount was once of pentagonal form. There were originally three rivet holes on the upper side, in only the central one of which, a dome-headed rivet of iron, survives. The flange was originally pierced by two rivet holes, of which one survives and contains the remains of an iron rivet. The openwork design is symmetric…

Description:A late medieval (15th century) gold posy finger ring with an inscription which reads, in black letter: x cest mon desir (this is my wish). The ring is slightly distorted, but complete. The three words are spaced equally around the band and sit within lentoid expansions of two narrow ribs which encircle the ring. Between the words the spaces between the ribs and the rim of the ring are infilled with a diagonal grid. The words themselves may originally have been displayed within fields of enamel, perhaps red. Traces of enamel appear to survive against the keyed bac…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete Late Bronze Age gold-plated penannular ring with a near-circular cross section. Damage on one of the terminals shows that the ring has been plated but the nature of the core is unclear (although it is likely to be copper alloy on the ground of known comparanda). There is no sign of banding in differential shades of gold, this being a common form of decoration on similar rings. Dimensions: Diameter 13.9mm; thickness 4.2mm; weight 2.77g.
