A Medieval copper-alloy spanning hook from a crossbow. The object has a thickened hooked terminal with signs of wear at one end of a shaft which tapers to a prominent collar with a single narrow ridge on each side. On the other side of the collar is a triangular loop, now incomplete and distorted, with a flat inner face. The object has a dark green patina with a pitted surface. Spanning hooks (sometimes called draw hooks) were attached to the belt of the crossbowman and were used to draw back the bow spring while the archer was in a squatting position. A 13th centuryAD silver seal matrix with a late Roman gemstone inlay of banded agate. The matrix is oval and comprises three silver components plus the stone inlay. These components include the seal face itself, an oval plate to hold the gem and a suspension loop with a tapering tail the tip of which is now missing. The back of the matrix is slightly raised to form a low cone. The encircling inscription in Lombardic characters reads: +IOhS:EST:NOMEN:EIVS: (John is his name). A clay tobacco pipe bowl bearing the initials IS on the spur (also submitted from the same findspot were three plain stem fragments of probable 17th century date). Dr David Higgins comments: Fragment from the bowl a clay tobacco pipe with fluted decoration on the bowl sides. Fluted decoration became popular from the late 18th century onwards and this particular style with quite narrow and closely spaced flutes dates from around 1820-1880. A large post medieval cast copper alloy toy cannon measuring 87.44mm. The chase tapers lightly and the muzzle is straight rather than flaring. There is a pair of prominent trunnions on the moulded reinforcement ring. The cascabel is rounded with prominent collars and ends in a substantial knob. The vent is presently plugged.
