Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. 11th century). A large part of the left hand side of the mount (when viewed from the front oriented to the creatures depicted upright) has broken away, but it is clear that the mount was once of pentagonal form. There were originally three rivet holes on the upper side, in only the central one of which, a dome-headed rivet of iron, survives. The flange was originally pierced by two rivet holes, of which one survives and contains the remains of an iron rivet. The openwork design is symmetric…

Description:A late medieval (15th century) gold posy finger ring with an inscription which reads, in black letter:

Traces of enamel appear to survive against the keyed bac…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Published
A complete Late Bronze Age gold-plated penannular ring with a near-circular cross section. Damage on one of the terminals shows that the ring has been plated but the nature of the core is unclear (although it is likely to be copper alloy on the ground of known comparanda). There is no sign of banding in differential shades of gold, this being a common form of decoration on similar rings.
Dimensions: Diameter 13.9mm; thickness 4.2mm; weight 2.77g.

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of an ingot of light brown/yellow gold. The fragment has a rounded rectangular section and bears many hammering facets, mainly on the slightly convex upper face. There are a number of facetted hollows, particularly on the lower, concave surface, perhaps from its being held in a vice. Both broken ends are left rough.
Such objects are difficult to date. And wide date range of Iron Age to early medieval seems reasonable.
