Large composite cast copper alloy horse harness pendant. The pendant is formed from a six lobed frame with a raised moulded line between each lobe. The frame is flat to the reverse but the upper face of each lobe is bevelled to the inside face. To the centre of the frame is a large globular headed rivet with a large circular sectioned shaft. This holds a large, thin circular plate to the rear of the frame, in effect making the pendant solid and not openwork. The end of the rivet is clearly seen through the other side. To the top of the frame is an elongated neck which would have held t…

Fragment of Middle Saxon copper alloy pin. What remains of the pin are the head and a fragment of shaft. The head is polyhedral (i.e. a cuboid with the corners cut off). Each large face of the pin has four incised rings with a slight depression to their centre. The other facets of the pin head all have a singular similar incised ring, except for the four lower facets (i.e. the cut off diagonal corners). Beneath the pin head is an integrally moulded collar, beneath which extends a portion of the circular sectioned shaft. The fragment is 20.1mm long, of which 8.62mm is the shaft. It is 8…

Copper alloy medieval strap end. This strap end is formed from a narrow sheet of metal folded lengthways. One end of the strap end tapers to a rounded flat loop and forms the back of the strap end, being narrower than the portion in front. Extending from the end of the front, broader portion is an elongated neck, sub circular in section, that terminates in a flat round loop, parallel with the other loop. The neck is decorated to either end with a pair of transverse grooved lines. Both flat loops have a circular perforation and they would have been fixed to the strap with a rivet that w…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy object, possibly a medieval ring brooch. The object takes the form of a flat, circular frame. The original surface survives with a dark green patina but is obscured by dirt and possibly corrosion product. It appears to be plain. There is no obvious pin bar, but the frame does seem to narrow and pinch at one particular point, where, conceivably a pin could be fitted. However, the object is inconclusive and may serve another function entirely. The frame has an external diameter of 25.58mm. It is of uneven width, but is 65.4mm at the widest point. It is 3.16mm thick. The…

Cast lead weight, probably of Viking date. The object has been cast in one piece and takes the form of a flattened sphere.
