16th-20th century plain gold finger-ring or decorative band Description: Complete gold ring. The hoop has a D shaped section. The ring is plain inside and out without any hallmark or maker’s mark. The interior of the hoop is not well finished or worn. Though it is probably a finger ring, the possibility remains that it is a decorative band from another, unknown object. Dimensions: External diameter: 25.47mm, Weight: 14.27g. The object contains a minimum of 10% gold, however in the absence of any marks, there is no evidence to securely date the object pre-1705. Consequently …

Incomplete gold ring. The hoop of the ring is circular in section with marginally broader shoulders that taper into the thin band. The ring has an integral bezel that is oval in plan and sub lozenge shape in section, in that it is slightly conical with the underneath being chamfered. To either side of the bezel, where it meets the hoop is a small transverse ridge, almost wedge shaped in appearance. The bezel is empty but would once have held a small uncut (cabochon) stone (such as a sapphire, ruby or garnet). It is slightly misshaped around the internal edges. The hoop is also slightl…

Treasure Case 2006 T151. Date: 15th century Description: Fragment of silver medieval iconographic finger ring. What remains of the ring are the bezel and the shoulders of the hoop. The bezel is sub rectangular in plan. It is slightly bevelled with a raised line dividing the bezel lengthways. To either side of the line is a crudely incised figure of a saint. The line that divides the bezel continues onto each shoulder but is much more pronounced. To either side of this line, the shoulders of the hoop are significantly grooved. This gives the hoop a slightly triangular section. The b…

Complete silver ring. The ring takes the form of a plain D-sectioned band. To the inner surface is the inscription 'OBEY GOD'. A gold tinge to the inner surface suggests that the ring was once gilded. No traces of gilt survive to the outer surface. Copper alloy Roman finger ring of Henig type Xb. Catherine Johns describes this type of ring as having ‘hunched’ shoulders (Johns, 1996, The Jewellery of Roman Britain, London, UCL Press, page 50). The hoop of the ring is sub triangular in section and almost D-shaped in profile, as the two shoulders are noticeably cusped. Each shoulder is decorated with an incised, vertical line, just below the point where they are cusped, otherwise the hoop is plain. The bezel is set high above the shoulders and is oval. It is set with a flat blue glass intaglio. The intaglio is crudely carved wit…

Small gold finger-ring. The hoop of the ring is formed from five lozenge-shaped panels that give the ring a hexagonal shape. Each panel is undecorated on both inner and outer faces. The hoop is slightly more rounded on the interior where each panel meets the next, probably for comfort while being worn. The ring survives in good condition with few surface scratches or marks. The ring has an external diameter of 17.3mm and weighs 5.52g. It is 14th or 15th century in date.

Fragment of 15th or early 16th century finger ring. What remains of the ring is the bezel with a small fraction of the hoop (essentially the shoulders) to either side. The bezel is sub oval with diagonal corners. It is decorated with an incised design of a letter surmounted by a crude crown, possibly a Lombardic T, set within a grooved border. The surface of the object survives with a dark green patina, though it is abraded and pitted revealing patches of lighter green. Break edges are worn, suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The bezel is 15.02mm long and 10.12mm wide. One surviv…

Fragment of gold post-medieval finger ring. The fragment is the bezel of the ring. It is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in section. It appears to be hollow. The bezel is set with a rectangular cut red stone (or possibly red glass). The stone in the second setting is damaged. The sides of the bezel are decorated with raised lines, which form scallops. Beneath these, on all sides is a border of tiny dotted or dashed indents. Around the bottom of the bezel is a slight flanged rim. This is decorated with a running motif of raised hollow squares and solid dashes. The underneath of …

Complete gold ring. The hoop has a D shaped section. The exterior is engraved with cross hatching within borders, extending around the entirety of the hoop. A maker's mark ‘II’ is visible. The ring has an external diameter of 18.94mm. The width of hoop is 3.86mm and the object weighs 2.73g. It dates from the second half of the 17th century to the first quarter of the 18th century.

Complete copper alloy Roman finger ring of Henig type II. The bevel of the ring is set with a surviving oval orange glass intaglio. The intaglio is 9.02mm long and 7mm wide and is upstanding above the ring for 0.98mm. It is crudely carved with a fully draped figure standing right, possibly wearing a helmet. The left arm is raised, the right by the side. It is possibly a crude attempt at representing Minerva. The intaglio is set in the long broad, flattened top to the ring, i.e. the ring is semicircular in profile, when viewed with the flat portion uppermost. This flattened portion is 1…

Complete cast copper alloy medieval finger ring. This ring is very small and probably intended for a child or the tip of a lady’s finger (as is seen carved on effigies of the time). The circular hoop is even in width and thickness with a circular section. The integrally moulded bezel is subcircular with a diameter of 8.3mm and a height of 4.46mm. The bezel is hollow to receive a fitting, which is now missing. There are no signs of fixing adhesive within. The object is abraded, but the original surface survives with an even mid green patina. Incomplete silver gilt late medieval to post-medieval finger ring (1400-1700). This object represents approximately one half of the original hoop of the ring. The hoop is flat in section. It has been moulded with the design of two clasped hands, which extend from cuffs, both shown with three moulded dots or buttons running along the underside. The cuffs in turn extend from the hoop. At this point, the hoop has been moulded with a crescent shaped end, to differentiate between the two portions. To the right side the hoop is decorated with two, transverse grooved lines, before being trunc…
