Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Incomplete gold ring. The hoop of the ring is circular in section with marginally broader shoulders that taper into the thin band. The ring has an integral bezel that is oval in plan and sub lozenge shape in section, in that it is slightly conical with the underneath being chamfered. To either side of the bezel, where it meets the hoop is a small transverse ridge, almost wedge shaped in appearance. The bezel is empty but would once have held a small uncut (cabochon) stone (such as a sapphire, ruby or garnet). It is slightly misshaped around the internal edges. The hoop is also slightl…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Unidentified cast copper-alloy object. The object is incomplete in length and would have been hollow, but only half of its total diameter has survived so the object is now C-shaped. The hollow inside of the surviving part of the object is four-sided, flat and plain. The outside of the object consists of two integral parts. From the break edge the first half of the object is plain with four thin (2.6mm) flat sides. Beyond this the object becomes thicker (9.6mm) as it projects out at a right angle for a distance of 5.5mm before tapering inwards to meet the internal edge of the objec…

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete lead alnage seal, probably of James II. The seal is complete, though worn and is formed from two circular discs joined by a rectangular strip or tag of lead, which was then folded over the edge of cloth, so that the discs align. One disc is moulded with a lion facing left with 2 ½ below, for the two and a half pence subsidy rate, within a border of dots. The opposite disc is moulded with a bust facing right, presumably James II, within a border of dots and seemingly no legend. The lead survives in good condition and is a creamy white. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy medieval sub-triangular buckle. The buckle frame is flat in section. It is damaged, with the narrowed and offset strap bar and buckle pin entirely missing, leaving only the curved side arms of the buckle, now slightly bent out of shape, but still roughly C shaped. The front end of the buckle is expanded, and when complete would have tapered to form the triangular front, probably with a trefoil terminal. It too is damaged and the point and terminal have broken away. There is no grooved pin rest. The expanded point is decorated with a central line, with a triangular panel t…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete post medieval mount, probably from a sword belt. The mount would once have consisted of a rectangular frame with a circular loop set to the bottom of one long edge with a decorative extension from the top short edge. This object represents the decorative extension, as the rectangular frame and side loop are now entirely missing. The fragment, which is flat in section, has an integral wasted neck, which extends from a rectangular band that would have lain across the top short end of the main frame. The neck is set with a central rivet, intact but now flush with the mount and…

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete cast copper alloy ‘south western’ type late Middle Bronze Age palstave axe. The back portion of the axe has a septum that is rectangular in plan with a pronounced backstop. The side flanges are high, and at their highest point rise fractionally past the backstop, along the axe’s length. The flanges then angle down sharply towards the rear of the axe and reach the septum at a point just before the butt, typical of this variant. This gives the back portion of the axe a sharply wedge shaped profile. The butt of the axe is slightly chipped and worn. The blade of the axe is r…
