Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small penannular gold ring with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold. The external surfaces are very worn. Visual inspection suggested that the piece consists of a gold covering over a base metal core; this was confirmed by scientific analysis. This is a well known Late Bronze Age type, decorative in character, dating to circa 1150-750 BC.

Small penannular ring comprising a plain round to oval-sectioned hoop with flat terminals. The interior of the hoop and the flat terminal surfaces have not been polished. Gold content approximately 82%. The specific gravity at 16 is not low enough to indicate that the ring has a base metal core.

The find comprises a loop of thick gold wire of roughly circular cross-section, the ends overlapping. Onto this are threaded nine rings, seven of which are of the type known as composite; two are simple rings. One of the latter (i) is a loop of gold wire with overlapping ends; the wire tapers from one end to the other. The other (ii) is a penannular ring of round-sectioned wire, the terminals close together. Of the composites: (iii) is a triple ring of three lightly C-sectioned strips probably soldered together. The terminals of one meet; the other two display a narrow gap. (iv) is a…

Report to H. M. Coroner on find of potential Treasure: Middle Bronze Age torc fragment (2003 T19) Fragment of one end of a four-flange twisted torc consisting of part of the body and plain terminal; the greater part of the terminal is missing. The break at the terminal end is rough; at the body end the piece appears to have been cut by blow(s) from something like a chisel. It is likely to have been broken, and probably folded, in antiquity. Maximum length (as folded) 24mm; maximum thickness (flange to flange) 8mm; thickness at terminal 5mm, weight 12.95 grams. Iden…

Small, solid penannular ring with irregularly facetted section. Each flattened face has one row of pointillĂ© dots and there is another on the outer face; between, there are rows of finely executed oblique strokes in opposing directions; in places the latter are very worn. Maximum external diameter 11mm; maximum internal diameter 7mm; breadth 2mm; weight 1.19 grams. X-ray fluorescence analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content of 79%. Identification The piece may be ascribed to the Late Bronze Age penannular ring series (circa 1150-750BC), a…

Slightly curved gold strip, broken at both ends. The long edges are intact; one is lightly inturned. The outer surface bears 7 grooves parallel to the long edges giving a ridged effect. Under magnification the appearance of the broken ends suggests that the piece may have been made from a double thickness of gold foil. Length 16.4mm; width 8.1mm; thickness 1.2mm; weight 0.69 grams. Identification: While the piece bears a superficial resemblance to some Bronze Age types, it differs in detail. The very high silver content also suggests a later dating. However the piece lacks di…

Small annular gold bead formed from a piece of sheet gold. The join is faintly visible. The hole is blocked with soil. Diameter 5mm; breadth 4mm; weight 0.32 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of this bead, indicated a surface composition of approximately 80-82% gold, 15-16 % silver, with approximately 3% copper. A number of gold beads are known from the British and Irish Bronze age and these are chiefly biconical or tubular (eg that from Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, dated to the Middle Bronze Age, c 1400-1100 BC)(Varndell, G. 3 fragments of gold bar, flattened by hammering. Lengths 29, 25 and 9mm. 1 fragment of gold chopped from a thin round-sectioned bar, distorted to an 'S' shape, length 29mm. 1 very pitted and eroded gold fragment, length 15mm. 1 fragment of round-sectioned, tapering brass bar, length 30mm. Conclusion: The gold fragments could be ancient but diagnostic features are insufficient to attribute to any chronological or cultural context. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the objects they cannot be securely dated to pre-1713 and as such fall outside the provisions of the Treasure A…

A Copper Age (Chalcolithic) gold 'basket ornament', possibly a hair ornament or ear ring, cut from thin gold sheet into an elongated oval shape extending into a narrow tang. The piece has been flattened out and is crinkled both horizontally and vertically. The oval plate is delineated by two concentric grooves following the edge, and two grooves running the length of the tang. The space within the oval plate is filled by four zones of grooves running perpendicular to the long edges and bounded by the inner concentric groove, giving four filled and three plain zones symmetrically place…

A flint arrowhead of probable Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The artefact is triangular in plan, the two converging sides being around twice as long as the horizontal bottom side. Both surfaces display evidence of retouch, which has created a lenticular cross section. The retouch is confined to the edges of the piece, the central areas retaining what is either an original cortex layer or, more likely, a recortified surface. If the latter, then it is possible that this arrowhead has been cut down from a previously made tool. The remainder of the flint is black and displays …

Short length of gold strip, probably deliberately broken. In the absence of archaeological context it is not possible to assign this to any particular date or culture and is best regarded as an undiagnostic fragment. It is noted that two Middle Bronze Age ribbon torcs were found two fields away (2009 T435). The widths recorded for them are less in both cases. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 Gillian Varndell
