Object type: SPOON
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy spoon. The bowl is generally tapered (W. 22.6-8.4mm), is broken so that the junction with the handle is missing, and may therefore have been pear- or mandolin-shaped. Both pear- and mandolin-shaped spoons had narrow handles tapering to a point. Pear-shaped spoons appear to have been made in one piece, and generally date to the second half of the 1st century and 2nd century AD. Mandolin-shaped spoons were sometimes made in two pieces, with the bowl and handle being joined by a tenon, and were probably produced throughout the Roman period. Patchy mid-green patina.
