Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint knife manufactured from a long flake. The lack of invasive retouch perhaps indicates that the knife is Mesolithic rather than Neolithic or later. The flake appears to be complete, and its striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly visible at the proximal end. Retouch has been applied to both lateral edges but is only runs the entire way down the left lateral edge (when held with the dorsal side facing). On the other edge the retouch runs down approximately two thirds of the flint with the proximal end left unretouched. The distal end terminates at a diago…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint broken blade of probable Mesolithic or Neolithic date. The flint is brown in colour with an area of cortex on the left side, just before the break. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible on the ventral face at the proximal end of the flint. There is fine retouch, predominantly applied from the ventral face on the right edge of the flint. The fairly even patina of the flint suggests that the break is ancient rather than recent. The flint may have been used as a cutting blade. It probably ranges in date from 8300 to circa 3000 BC.

Object type: BURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint tool possibly a burin. The flint is a pale cream in colour and is largely cortical. A spall appears to have been removed from the distal end, creating a point which may have been used for boring. However, it is possible that this spall removal is the result of accidental damage. There also appears to be an area of slight retouch along the right lateral edge, above the main area of cortex. The bulb of percussion is not visible, and it is quite possible that the flint has been snapped. The flint is sub-triangular in section. It measures 32.2 mm long, 10.9 mm wide, 7.1…

A large piece of flint debitage, probably Mesolithic in date. It is not clear whether the flake was ever used as a tool, and it may simply be waste. There are faint traces of burning on the dorsal face. The flint ranges in colour from a pale cream to a pale brown. It measures 62.8 mm long, 41.7 mm wide, 13.3 mm thick and weighs 31.2 grams. It is lozenge shaped in section.

A Mesolithic flint blade. The flint has partial retouch along its right lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). This may have been to make the flint more comfortable to hold. The left lateral edge has no retouch but is naturally quite sharp, so this edge may have been used as a cutting blade. The distal end of the blade is cortical. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible at the proximal end on the ventral face. The ventral face is a dark grey in colour with cream to white inclusions. The left side of the dorsal face is a cream to white colour, whilst the right is a dark g

A Mesolithic flint blade. The blade does not appear to have been subject to further retouch after having been struck from its core. The bulb of percussion and bulb scar are clearly visible at the butt of the blade, on the ventral side. The dorsal face has negative removal scars where other flakes were removed from the core previously. The tip of the blade is missing, and judging by the even patina this is an ancient break. The flint is a pale cream colour with small orange to brown inclusions. The flint is broadly triangular in section. It measures 35.4 mm long, 15.4 mm wide, 6.5 mm t…

A large flint flake, probably Mesolithic, and possibly a flake removed during core rejuvenation. There appears to be negative removal scars on two sides of the flake. There are two small areas of cortex remaining on the flake, one of which occurs at what seems to have been the striking platform. There is no clear evidence for the flake having been subject to further retouch after it was removed from the core. The flint is a grey to cream in colour with areas of brown ochre. The remaining cortex is a darker brown in colour. It measures 45.7 mm in length, 23.7 mm wide, 12 mm thick and w…

A piece of flint waste (debitage), probably Mesolithic, and possibly a worked out core. There are several areas where flakes have been removed from the piece, but they do not appear to have been removed in a very regular fashion. This piece may be the very last attempt at extracting usable flint flakes from the core, perhaps explaining the unusual angles from which flakes have been struck. The flint is cream to white in colour, with a small area of cortex remaining. Length 31.4 mm; width 27.5 mm; thickness 17.7 mm; weight 13.1 grams.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible late Neolithic or early Bronze Age flint oblique arrowhead. The flint is roughly arrowhead shaped, and appears to have a possible barb and tang. However, these do not appear to have been deliberately fashioned through retouch, and the shape of the flint may be accidental. The dating and function of the flint is further called into question given that significant quantities of Mesolithic flints have been recovered from the same area. The tip of the flint is missing, and a difference between the patina at the break and the rest of the flint indicates that this break is relat…

A Mesolithic notched blade. There are two notches and further retouch along the left lateral edge (when held with dorsal side facing). The opposite lateral edge has also been subject to some retouch. It is uncertain whether both sides would have had a function, or whether one would have been hafted. However, given that both sides have been subject to retouch they may have fulfilled different functions. The flint is pale grey in colour. It measures 27.33 mm long, 11.07 mm wide, 3.89 mm thick and weighs 1.1 grams. It is sub-triangular in section.

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable Mesolithic flint microlith. The tool has not been formed using the microburin technique, but rather appears to have been struck directly from a core, as a striking platform and bulb of percussion are visible. The flint is probably part of what was once a composite tool or weapon, possibly an arrow, which would have utilised many such flints mounted into a shaft. It measures 10.63 mm long, 3.92 mm wide, 1.58 mm thick and weighs less than 0.1 grams. It is sub-triangular in section. The flint is a pale cream in colour.

A probable Mesolithic microdenticulate on a flake. The flake is sub triangular in shape and has a series of tiny notches removed from one lateral edge, forming a saw-like edge. Much of the dorsal face of the flake is cortical. The tool would probably have been used in a sawing motion to cut through tough animal or vegetable products. It is lozenge form in section. A probable Mesolithic tool, probably a scraper made from a flake. The butt of the flake is largely cortical, with the bulb of percussion just below this cortex on the ventral face. On the dorsal face, just above the cortex at the proximal end, the flake has been extensively worked with invasive retouch, possibly to form a scraping edge. Alternatively, this end may have been reworked to form a blunted ege to allow the flint to be held more comfortably, and it may have been the opposite end which was intended for use as a tool. Here, a notch has been removed and there is some further re…

A Mesolithic flint blade. It has been retouched with a notch towards the butt end of the left lateral edge (when held with the dorsal side facing) and also at the distal end. Both areas of retouch were perhaps designed to perform scraping functions. The blade measures 38.77 mm long, 12.51 mm wide, 3.92 mm thick and weighs 1.8 grams. The ventral face is slightly concaved and the blade is trapezoidal in section. the flint has a pale grey to brown patina, revealing a dark grey where it has been retouched.

A Mesolithic flint bladelet. It appears to have been broken in prehistory, as there is a break with a patina which matches that visible on the exterior of the rest of the flint. It is possible that this break was deliberate as part of the manufacture of a microlith using the microburin technique, though this is far from certain. The remains of the bladelet measure 26.01 mm long, 10.97 mm wide, 5.43 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams. It is triangular in section and grey in colour with cream patches.

A Mesolithic flint flake. The flake may have some retouch at the proximal end, although it is also possible that this is associated with prepration of the striking platform on the core prior to the knapping of the flake. There appears not to be any further evidence for retouch. The flint has a cream patina. It is sub-triangular in section and measures 19.91 mm long, 6.78 mm wide, 1.77 mm thick and weighs 0.2 grams.

A tiny flint artefact, probably a microlith. The tool may have been formed from a snapped bladelet using the microburin technique. It is likely that this flint would have been one part of a composite tool or weapon which utilised many other small flints, quite possibly an arrow. The flint is grey to white in colour. It measures 13.59 mm long, 2.88 mm wide, 1.3 mm thick and weighs 0.1 grams. It is triangular in section.
