Copper alloy bracelet fragment. About half of a cast D-section beaded or segmented bracelet, with a thin billeted ring between each of thirteen bulbous mouldings along its surviving course. This appears related to the decoration of a torc, though this object would not fit readily round the neck of an adult. An Iron Age date would usually be apt, but the prominent presence of a slightly unusual [for this region] range of Early Medieval objects might permit its later use or reuse, especially when allied with the putative significance of the place names near the find spot, which attest an…

Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy button and loop fastener. A massy cast oval or vesica-shaped loop with a thickened lug in its keeled front above and below the circular central aperture and with a grooved or stepped front; a round-section shank springing from the back of the upper part of the loop is turned through a right angle with a circular loop at its end. Abraded. The form does not appear in Wild’s type series though he ascribes massy casting of his Type 1 to an essentially Iron Age origin, pre-dating most others. This is a notably heavy example. Suggested date: Late Iron Age to Early Roman, 2…

Copper alloy coin. Cast potin of an unknown ruler of the Cantiaci of Kent, probably ABC no. 132, described by Rudd et al. as ‘very common’ – though not necessarily so in North Lincolnshire – the PAS database lists only three others for the administrative county, all fairly local: from Appleby, Roxby cum Risby and Brigg, perhaps suggesting a traffic along the Ancholme.
Obverse description: head of Apollo left.
Reverse description: butting bull, whether left or right is uncertain.

Copper alloy possible bracelet fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast curved strip with two hemispherical bosses and one halved hemispherical boss set along a narrower [ 3.3mm] curved D-section band. The half-hemisphere bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.8mm probably associated with a closing mechanism and a further joining element. At the other end, the narrow band terminates at a short point, perhaps suggesting a penannular rather than a closed band. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100BC-AD50

Pottery. Reduced fabric with oxidised outer margins and very frequent calcareous inclusions to length 4mm; triangular profile rim sherd. The fabric may be in the Iron Age tradition and the vessel itself may have been handmade – there is no evidence for the regularity of a wheel-thrown form though the sherd is fiercely abraded. Copper alloy cosmetic set fragment. A cast D-section ring of diameter 23.1mm retains an implement which has been folded with a loop to attach it to the ring, the loop being decorated by a single central longitudinal groove on one side – apparently the reverse. The implement has a keeled rhomboid lightly concavo-convex blade with a pointed tip springing from one side of the loop, with a thinner and also lightly concavo-convex strip or tab as an apparent counterpart behind the better-preserved part. A further thin leaf of copper alloy may be clasped between these elements. What rem…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast sub-cylindrical object with slightly flared and flanged ends which partially close an internal cavity and lacking a wall for about one quarter of its circumference, probably as an original feature rather than damage. The outer side bears symmetrical D-shaped moulded features with a triangular field between them on either side, with grooves separating these mouldings from the ends. A linear border also appears along one side of the gap in the wall. The form recalls the sheathing of objects of other materials with copper alloy though there is no rus…
