A coin of Louis XIV of France. Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows. Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old. This is therefore a réformation: A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'. The date of the earlier coin is under the King's bust, which is upside-down in relation to the new design. On th…

Two fragments of a very badly worn Roman silver coin. The obverse shows what appears to be a clean shaven male head facing left. Only the face and the front of the neck have survived, most of the head is missing. There are no other decipherable elements to the obverse and no inscription appears to have survived. The reverse shows what appears to be the pointed prow of a ship or galley with suggestions of oars projecting down on the near side and a 'composite' ram on the front clearly visible. Part of what may be the sail is visible as a series of small raised squares rising above t…

Sub-circular struck copper alloy coin. The obverse contains a very crude stylised diademed (crowned), or possibly helmeted, head facing right. It is difficult to interpret the head, however there is what appears to be a faint band extending over the head from front to back which may be a stylised crest. There is also a small structure just behind the jaw which may be a crude ear guard although it may equally be a very poorly formed ear. There is possibly part of a legend visible above the head which may read: LIII. The reverse is even more difficult to decipher. The main element is…

A corroded copper-alloy medieval Portuguese coin; a ceitil of Duarte I (1433 - 1438) minted in Lisbon. Ref: See C.M. Almeida do Amaral, Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas (Lisbon 1977); p.315, nos 958ff. Edward Besly comments that there are few ceitils from English find spots, though the ceitils of Duarte's successor Afonso V (1438-81) are very common finds all across South Wales. A similar was is recorded under SWYOR-D03673.
