Description Four silver sixpences of Elizabeth I of England (1558-1603), dated 1567, 1574 and 1583 (found by Mr Small) and 1567 (found by Mr Williams). The coins display moderate amounts of wear through use, consistent with their having been lost or deposited at around the same time. Elizabeth’s silver coinage was of a consistently high fineness, in excess of 90% Ag. Discussion Silver coins of Elizabeth are found fairly regularly and the sixpence is a commonly-encountered denomination, playing a significant part in most coin hoards from the later sixteenth and sevente…

One hundred and five Roman coins of the third century A.D., with a date range c. 255-286. The coins have not been cleaned: for the most part they are corroded and cannot be catalogued in full detail. The coins are all of the type known today as 'radiates' (from the form of headgear of the imperial portraits). A summary list by reign can be seen below. Several other objects submitted by the finder were all found in the same general area. These have been examined by Mr Evan Chapman of AC-NMW. The copper-alloy vessel appears to have been placed in the ground upside-down, surviving o…

The find comprises two groats (4d pieces) of Edward III (1327-77), minted at London: 1. Series C, c.1351-2, North 1147; 4.16 g / 64.2 grains 2. Series D, c. 1354-5, North 1163; 4.30g / 66.3 grains. The two coins are in fairly fresh condition and likely to have been deposited within a few years of going into circulation. A series of other objects found in the same general area (see Treasure Receipt Form) were submitted for consideration as associated objects. In my opinion, none is likely to have been associated in the ground with the two coins. A silver penny of Elizabeth I …

Two fragments of a very badly worn Roman silver coin. The obverse shows what appears to be a clean shaven male head facing left. Only the face and the front of the neck have survived, most of the head is missing. There are no other decipherable elements to the obverse and no inscription appears to have survived. The reverse shows what appears to be the pointed prow of a ship or galley with suggestions of oars projecting down on the near side and a 'composite' ram on the front clearly visible. Part of what may be the sail is visible as a series of small raised squares rising above t…
