A coin of Louis XIV of France. Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows. Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old. This is therefore a réformation: A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'. The initial mark of the half crown has a flat bottom but the rest of the mark is lost. Thickness: 4.9mm Diameter: 35.4mm Weight: 35.1 grams.
