Third hammered issue, 1660-2; privy-mark: Crown
CAROLVS II D G MAG B[R FR E]T HI [REX]
CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO
North 2764; 4.54g: clipped, worn, holed; has been gilded and folded.
This is a damaged example of a coin that appears to have had an eventful existence. At some point early in its life, the coin has been gilded; it has also been folded thrice, to form a triangular or 'cocked hat' shape and has received a small piercing close to the top, as viewed on the obverse. It has subsequently been flattened and has been slightly clipped; much of the design has been subject to considerable wear, removing much of the gilding and relief.
It appears that the coin has been turned into some kind of keepsake or love token, but was subsequently returned to service fairly quickly as currency. The considerable wear and light weight (about 75% of its issue standard) are consistent with a loss date towards the end of the seventeenth century, around the time of the Recoinage of 1696-7.
